Great, But Dated

About twenty five years ago, I purchased the entire Tarbell series from a local magic shop. Over the years, they managed to pull their own disappearing act. When my grandson began to show interest in illusions, I decided to repurchase the first book to give him some instruction.
The book is still as wonderful as I had originally thought, and rarely is confusing. (There are some tricks the are poorly illustrated or poorly explained, but they are far and few between.) There are so many illusions here, that the ten or more illusions that are poorly explained, can be ignored.
I like the fact that he keeps hammering home the fact that illusion is all about the attitude of the illusionist. He makes it plain that he can not overstate the importance of practice, patter, and attitude. One of the most important things that he pushes is the fact that where your eyes go, as a performer are where the audience's eyes will go. Very important for a beginning practitioner.
But, it is dated. Few men wear even sports coats these days, that it can be difficult to pull off some of these illusions. It can be fun to sometimes chuckle when a routine starts out: Borrow a hat from a member of the audience..., borrow a handkerchief from a man in the audience...., Borrow a lit cigarette froma man in the audience..., or ask a member of the audience for a dollar coin....
Surprisingly, his patter may be dated, but it is not as male dominated as you might expect. Still, it would be a good idea to update the patter (He does suggest that you modify patter to fit your speech).
Many of the illusions he performs, now are pre-manufactured, but he shows you how to make them yourself. This is very important for a beginning magician because it also encourages experimentation.
It is a lot of fun to get this book out and work with my grandson on magic, and this was a very good introduction. As I remember, a person who is well versed in the Tarbell books, would be very far along to becoming a professional.

Bought this for my Grandson (Sullivan). I earned my way through College (U of Colorado) doing magic. Most of what I learned and did ... came right from the pages of this SERIES of Books written back in the 20's when you got to be a "professional" anything in America by buying books practical exercises. My grandfather was the City Engineer and got his "Engineering Degree" out of Chicago this way and I still have all his books. This series of Magic books is the most comprehensive and complete tome of magic ever written and was bought and sold over the years by various publishing houses particularly Tannen Magic out of New York and still in business.

You know in the movies when the Wizard takes out his Tome of Magic spells ... embossed gold inland leather, bigger in size than a City Library Atlas, huge, thick, and dusty.... hand printed and handed down through the ages by his ancestors/predecessors??? Well ...that's not true ... its imaginary movie histrionics ..the REAL DEAL is Harlan Tarbell course in Magic original Volumes 1 through 5. Look it up on Wikipedia "Tarbell Course" ... and BELIEVE!!!

Of course .... the SUPREME LAWS of Magic ... require that you can only obtain your own copy from ... your GRANDFATHER !!!

This is the first edition: the second edition is supposed to be the classic but it's really expensive. This was only a few dollars and was very useful.

A 'Must Have' for Interpreters

This fun-to-read, chock-full of useful ideas book should be in any Interpreter's library. In fact, if I could only buy one book for my interpretive library, this would be it. Several rangers I know (inc. myself) refer to this book as 'the Bible'. This was the book I chose for the required textbook for the Interpretive training course for docents at the Desert Botanical Garden. The chapters are concise and full of examples of interpretive theory IN ACTION. Lots of whimsical pictures to illustrate main points-- but don't think just because it has pictures that it is full of fluff. It's a reference book you will pick up again and again to review interpretive techniques. Definitely a 'how-to', hands-on book.

Excellent guide to preparing interpretive programs, if a little dated

Sam Ham's Environmental Interpretation distills Freeman Tilden's six principles of interpretation into four essentials. The book then serves as a comprehensive 'how to' guide to preparing your own interpretive programs, from guided walks to exhibit signage.

Ham's principles guided me in the creation of my documentary "Tracking the Anasazi - How Great Houses and Stripped Resources Led To Abandonment". His section on creating a theme for any presentation especially helped me focus on what I wanted to say. Answering the audience's unspoken question 'So what?' is essential in any presentation.

The sections on slide shows and blackboards may be a bit dated, but their general principles apply to any media you use. Overall, this book is very valuable to anyone doing interpretation. The National association for Interpretation (NAI) uses it in their certification test.

Ham is apparently working on an updated edition, but there's no word on when it will appear.

UPDATE, 12/6/2013 - The latest version is "Interpretation - Making a Difference on Purpose".

About the Author
Osamu Tezuka (1928-89) is the godfather of Japanese manga comics. He originally intended to become a doctor and earned his degree before turning to what was then a medium for children. His many early masterpieces include the series known in the U.S. as Astro Boy. With his sweeping vision, deftly interwined plots, feel for the workings of power, and indefatigable commitment to human dignity, Tezuka elevated manga to an art form.

The later Tezuka, when he authored Buddha, often had in mind the mature readership that manga gained in the sixties and that had only grown ever since. The Kurosawa of Japanese pop culture, Osamu Tezuka is a twentieth century classic.

Tezuka is a multiple award-winner on both sides of the Pacific. His Adolf won the Kodansha Manga Award in 1986. His works Buddha and Dororo have received Eisner Awards in North America over the past decade.

Recommended for those who don't think anything serious can be expressed in comic form. This is Tezuka at his best.

"God of Comix" indeed; masterstroke of cosmic king

Probably the most cohesive of Tezuka's "cram all of life's absurdities" comix without hitting you too hard over the head with it's -ahem- message. Toge is still at the story's front in this volume, which was kind of disappointing seeing as how he introduced himself as a minor character, yet he marries into the most screwed up family imaginable during the most violent war ever; it's a little too convenient for an arch that isn't even the focus of the story, and that problem pops up here and there with Kamil and Kaufmann, too. Kaufmann's story here is probably the best, being the most vile character now that Lamp and Egg are (mostly) on the sideline. Kamil isn't given the depth I would've liked to see, and miss Ogi and Colonel Honda are now one-dimensional where the first volume made me think they have a bigger role. Tezuka fans have come to accept over the years that he mostly wrote characters as stereotypes; think of him as the Gene Roddenberry of Eastern comic ideals. These tropes are used again and again so he can tell his stories in the most cinematic way comix can, and hey, at least he finished this one. Some of the monologue from Toge sounds more like 24th century utilitarianism after-thought instead of 20th century altruism.

I can't bash it all, though. It really comes together nicely. From the arctic north to the Palestinian deserts, the story of these three Adolf's teaches a message that Tezuka had been trying to work into every story he ever printed: that of love and personal achievement, done with characters with real pathos and an understandable misconception of the direction of life and where it *leads* (something Tezuka was obsessed with and drove into the ground with "Phoenix") in relation to kith and kin, and how patriotism quickly becomes fascism. Tezuka was always looking for the story-arch of the cosmos (Apollo, Phoenix, etc.)-- talkin' bout a thing called love, and here he's pointing past the fence, all the way to alpha-centauri, saying, "Engage."

The story gets significantly more serious, but all the more compelling. I can seriously imagine Marjane Satrapi being influenced by Tezuka, after reading this. This story is very different from "Kimba" or "Mighty Atom"!

Carol Suraci’s life has been a love affair with language and books. What a fun and exciting read!

With a combination of vampires, romance, and a battle between good and evil, you won’t be able to keep from turning the pages. You’ll be cheering for Mallory and Hayden the whole way through, and before you know it, you’ll be wishing Hayden had waited and searched for YOU for centuries! The characters are truly wonderful, unique and relatable. I highly recommend this book. I guarantee you will read it more than once!

Exquisite depiction of creatures hungry for lust and speculation

I am not usually a science fiction reader, but this novel really captivated me since the very beginning. The monologues felt real and increasingly connected me with its characters. It has an overall dark aura yet soft edges. NYC is like a partner in crime. The city holds this story together and becomes the perfect scene to portray creatures hungry for lust and speculation. This has to be the best vampire story I've come across. It will test your senses. I also enjoyed its pace and unexpected twirls. I'd say it's a great choice for travelers as the read is intriguing and energizing. I got my hands on it on a long-haul flight and it kept me hooked since the take off. I'm so happy I got it and would definitely recommend it!

Forever Midnight is a fascinating story about good vs evil and immortality. The love story between Hayden and Mallory is so absorbing that you cannot put this book down.
As we are drawn into the evil that lurks around them, you are deeply moved by their plight. The author's interesting and vivid writing compels us to keep on reading. I loved this book and I recommend it to all readers.

About the Author

Born in Guinea, author and playwright Djibril Tamsir Niane is a descendant of griots – African oral historians/storytellers. He translated Sundiata, as told by the griot Djeli Mamadou Kouyate, into French under the title Soundjata ou Epoque Mandiginue in 1960. It was later translated into English by G. D. Pickett in 1965.

Great for ANYONE!

OK I am seriously not a fan of history books or even of many books that are supposed to be "riveting" but this book was wonderful, imaginative, and well . . . riveting. I hate how many books go on and on and spread a plot thin. This book, however, fits an incredibly eventful adventure into less than 100 pages without a lot of meaningless details. The one thing that does make this book a slow read, however, is the need to constantly flip back and forth between the story and the plethora of notes. Nonetheless, I recommend this book. I mean think about the fact that I went out of my way to go to Amazon.com to write this review; I don't do that a lot.

A CELEBRATION OF AFRICAN ORATURE

Djibril Tamsir Niane's Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali(revised version, 2006) is an excellent example of novelistic palimpsest. This novel is a parody of the Epic of Sundiata.It is a reproduction of the epic tale of the semi-legendary emperor of the Mande who lived in the thirteenth century. There is no single definitive version or "text" of the Sundiata epic story. Various versions of the Sundiata have been told, and continue to be told, sung and performed by various African griots. The Mande who revere Sundiata as a great cultural hero continue to celebrate his memory in various epic performances of his story. Niane's version of the Sundiata epic is derived from an oral tale recounted by the griot Djeli Mamoudou Kouyaté of the village of Djeliba Koro in present-day Guinea, not far from the capital of the old Malian Empire. Niane acknowledges him in the preface to his novel in the following terms: "This book is primarily the work of an obscure griot from the village of Djeliba Koro in the circumscription of Siguiri in Guinea. I owe him everything"(xxiii).It is essential to take cognizance of the many layers of translation and transcription that have been at work to produce the written translations of the oral text. Niane attributes to the griot credit not only for the oral material he used, but also for the form and style of his novel, claiming for himself only the modest role of translator: ama, de Djeliba Koro et de Keyla et plus particulièrement à Djeli Mamadou Kouyaté, du village de Djeliba Koro (Siguiri):"This book is, then, the fruit of an initial contact with the most authentic traditionalists of Mali. I am nothing more than a translator; I owe everything to the masters of Djeli Koro and Keyla and more particularly to Djeli Mamadou Kouyaté of the village of Djeliba Koro(Siguiri) in Guinea" (xxiv).

By transcribing and translating Kouyaté's oral version of the Sundiata epic into French, Niane participates in the tradition of re-writing the history of his people--the Mande. Like most African novelists who attempt to incorporate oral tales into texts through the device of griotization, Niane translates not just the content of Kouyaté's message but also the style in which he renders imagery, rhythmical phrasing and incantatory repetitions:"I am a griot. It is I, Djeli Mamoudou Kouyaté, son of Bintou Kouyaté and of Djeli Kedian Kouyaté, master in the art of eloquence....The art of eloquence has no secrets for us; without us the names of kings would vanish into oblivion, we are the memory of mankind; by the spoken word we bring to life the deeds and exploits of kings for younger generations"(1). Niane makes a conscious effort to translate the imprints of the griot's style of storytelling into the written word. In his remarks on Niane's novel, Pageard notes:" Ce petit livre fera date dans l'histoire de la littérature africaine car il constitue l'une des premières réussites certaines de transposition fidèle quoique érudite, d'une légende orale dans l'art écrit d'inspiration européenne"(51)[This little book is an achievement that will stand out in the history of African literature given that it constitutes one of the first successful attempts at the faithful, though erudite transposition of an oral legend into writing inspired by European traditions.]

Niane reproduces the imaginative fertility of the griot in writing. Besides, he appropriates elements from the folktale, and interprets them as literary material for the writing of this novel. In a word, he reshapes an African oral tale into something traditionally Western, the novelistic genre. He keeps intact the epic tone of the narrative, including the traditional supernatural elements. His novel is designated in the subtitle as a national epic, "an epic of Mali". The narrator tells the story of Sogolon, the Buffalo-Woman, given to the Magnan Kon Fatta, the father of Sundjata, by the hunters who captured her but are unable to possess her. He also tells of the birth of the ugly, mute apparently retarded child, and his sudden miraculous awakening at the age of seven or eight, when he rises to his feet for the first time, bends the huge iron bar into a bow and uproots the baobab tree which he plants before his mother's hut; then he wanders in exile, until he vanquishes the sorcerer King Soumaoro with his secret weapon, returns to the capital, Niani and establishes a powerful empire. This is the crux of Niane's novel.

This text fulfills not a historical but also a didactic function. The epic hero represents the positive qualities of the Mande culture and people. Sundiata is a hero in the true sense of the word. Courageous and valiant, respectful of traditional mores, he firmly overcomes all the obstacles put in his way and triumphs over his adversary Soumaoro. For Niane, historical fiction should be made to teach the younger generations because history is not just a chronological order or a retelling of great events but a poetic awakening to the people who feature in these events. The creative translation process that enables Niane to re-write the Mande history in the form of an indigenized Europhone novel is to be understood in its most orthodox sense as the linguistic operation that consists in transposing meaning, worldview and imagination from one language to another. As Zabus points out, "This differs from the unorthodox sense of...an operation which allows for the presence within one linguistic system of several tongues, an operation of thought through which we must translate ourselves into the thought of the other language..." (188). Creative polytonality is a unique quality of Niane's epic literary work. Lovers of African orature would find this book a delight to read. It's been a best seller for three decades!

The Lion and the Buffalo of Mali, an epic of Sundiata

This book would receive a four out of five stars from me. I enjoyed some aspects of the book, such as the magic/folktales. I was most interested in the first half of the book, when Sogolon (Sundiata's mother) is first introduced and the sections that talked about Sundiata's childhood. When Sogolon and her son are exiled, though, I thought the story became kind of complicated and there were too many people being introduced all at once (most of them being rather inconsequential). This book overall however relays itself as a very appealing book for anyone young or old. One story that is very relatable to this book is Disney’s the Lion King. Simba is represented by Sundiata because the young princes unwillingly leave their empire/kingdom and then return to claim their thrones a few years later when the empire is in trouble. It was kind of interesting trying to find other similarities between them that might be less obvious. For instance, I believe Rafiki (the baboon) is supposed to represent the griot (the poet-historian who tells his king's story). I love traditional wonder tales, and this is a fine one, and enticingly told. It's full of rivalries, sorceries both for and against the hero, clever negotiation of politics as well as magic, heroic speeches (and plenty of proverbs, a distinctive aspect of its style). This story is among one of the greatest epics such as Homers the Iliad and the Odyssey. As the narrator of the story states, “Men of today, how small you are beside your ancestors, and small in mind too” (Niane 84). This quote reveals how important Sundiata really was as compared to what many people believe today.
