Practical advice from someone in the trenches

Possibly the single biggest hurdle for anyone wanting to leave the city and move rural is the issue of how to make a living in the country. A fortunate few can take their jobs with them (i.e. telecommuting). Others are retired. But what about the rest of us who don’t have those options?
Many novice ruralites have the naïve notion they can make a living by farming or homesteading. But what does it REALLY take to make a living from your land? There is an enormous gap between dreams and reality. Tim Young’s “How to Make Money Homesteading” steps in to bridge that gap.
In a clear and no-holds-barred writing style, Mr. Young explains some of the methods homesteaders can use to make a living from a small farm. Some suggestions have to do with producing from the land itself; others call for utilizing skills to provide goods or services; yet other suggestions deal with thrifty ways to spend less.
Whether it’s earning an income through your land, your products, or your skills – or all of the above – this book lays it on the line. It also gives numerous examples of people who have successfully created markets and a livelihood while living rural.
Mr. Young points out that the lure of the land – the desire to leave behind urban chaos and start each day listening to roosters and robins – is embedded in many people, but they are shackled by the golden handcuffs of employment. Rather it is a tool to help you to develop your own income-generation plan so you can make the transition from traffic to tractor, from cubicle to cabin.”
Speaking as someone who has lived rural and worked at home for the past 23 years, I can attest to the common sense value of this book if you want to learn what it takes to earn a living in the country.

Not Just for Wannabe Farmers

I don't know if would be ethical or not, but maybe this book should be republished under a bunch of different titles with just slightly edited text. This one will appeal to the person who is thinking of homesteading, or prepping, or similar mindsets, just because of the title.
Yet so many people will be looking for this book, and pass it over because they have a negative view of homesteading.
"I don't want to be a farmer!" "I don't want to be a hermit in Idaho!"
They'll look at books with titles like, "Be Your Own Boss", "Work From Home", "Make Your Passion Make a Living".
People who are looking for books from those mindsets need to look at this book.
It goes beyond just different ways to make money, into how to make a life that makes sense to you, so your efforts can give you lasting results, not just another buck to pay another bill.
Inspiration, examples, resources, reasoning, proof of possibility are all in this book. If you put just your Facebook time into an idea you got from this book, you will take back so much control over your life.

An idea book for homesteaders

Although many of us dream of verdant pastures and orchards dripping with fruit when we consider going back to the land, there's one thorny issue that will send most homesteaders-to-be scurrying back to the city within the first decade --- money. Yep, even though we'd rather focus on lambs and tomatoes, the most relevant green object for many new homesteaders is dollar bills.
The trouble is that homesteads require a lot of maintenance time and are often located in economically depressed parts of the country, so finding a nearby job that can fit between the cracks is tricky. In my experience, the homesteaders who go the distance are the ones who turn into entrepreneurs, making money from their farms or homes so they can escape the rat race (and find time for what really matters).
But what kind of business should you start? This is the question Tim Young answers in his new book. He mentions hundreds of money-making suggestions based on bringing in income from your land itself (for example, with farm stays or hunting leases), using your skills to make a buck (perhaps by being a mechanic or online copy-editor), or producing a product (such as cheese or chicken pluckers).
Young combines his own learnings with the experiences of eighteen other homesteading families to produce a well-rounded account of your options as an entrepreneurial homesteader. When you pull it all together, the author has created a must-read for anyone dreaming of homesteading, or wanting to make their homestead more financially secure.
