Exhausted from reading this the entire night instead of sleeping.

I stumbled on the Graveyard Queen a few weeks ago and read through the entire series in two days and quickly pre-ordered The Sinner. It was a happy surprise to see it on my Kindle, as I totally forgot ordering it (that's how quickly I hit the pre-order button).

I enjoy the main character and appreciate a heroine that is down-to-earth, independent, and makes adult decisions. If I had one negative thing to say, I found her moaning over Devlin to get a bit repetitive, though I do like the two as a couple.

The plot of each of these books is unique, refreshing, and original with enough twists and turns to keep you intrigued. The graveyard symbolism in all of these books is fascinating and I was particularly interested in the description of the mortsafes in this book.

I love the fantasy genre in general and it can be really hard to find books that have a new concept and don't feel a lot like every other book in the genre - this one is a total gem.

She did it again.

Someone already said it that The Graveyard Queen series is totally addictive. I have all the ebooks and also the fantastic audio versions. I usually steer clear from this genre, because i have trouble sleeping afterwords. The Restorer however, sucked me in before i realized how truly creepy it would get. By then it was too late...i was pulled to the other side ; ) I got through the first four books and the prequel in 5 days and had to wait about a month for The Sinner. It was an agony ; ) When i finally got it i didnt start reading it for a few days because the pleasure would end all too soon. Then i will be desolate again, waiting till next year for the last book. I already show signs of withdrawal so i would probably read the whole series again ; ) Now...The Sinner...i dont know how she does it, but this one is possibly the creepiest one of the whole series. Dark and sinister it wraps you up in a chilling embrace and holds you there to the stunning conclusion. It made me so paranoid that i could hear evil chanting every time i was alone in the house ; ) I cant wait for the last book. For those who enjoy audiobooks i warmly recommend the audio version, the narrator is absolutely fantastic.

Loved, and read, all of Amanda's books. She is one terrific writer. I have especially enjoyed The Graveyard Queen series, and have just finished The Sinner. She tells a story within a story. She's straight-forward, never "ghoulish" in her descriptions. You can almost feel her pain over her "gift," which is both blessing and curse. If ever there were a "care-giver," it's "Amelia Gray," a wonderful and reverent cemetery restorer!

In diesem Rahmen verfassten sie Gedichte, Erzählungen, Biographien, Essays etc. - hierin ist ein mutiger Emanzipationsakt gegen die gängige Kulturpolitik zu sehen, der mit persönlichen Risiken verbunden war, etwa der (offiziell nicht vorhandenen) Zensur oder gar dem Ausschluss aus dem Schriftstellerverband, der einem Berufsverbot gleich kam. Diese Themen werden speziell am Beispiel der Theorien und Arbeiten Georg Lukács' ausformuliert. Da die benannten Autoren allerdings auch im Westen rezipiert wurden, schützte sie oft ihr bekannter Name. Der Osten wollte sich diesbezüglich nicht weltöffentlich die Blöße geben, kulturelle Größen zu reglementieren. Ein weiterer Aspekt der Arbeit widmet sich der DDR-Germanistik, die letztlich entscheidenden Einfluss auf Lehrpläne an Schulen und Universitäten wie auch auf die Distribution von Literatur in den Verlagen der DDR hatte.

About the Author
Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Before retiring, Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years, where he honed an approach to teaching and writing that forms the foundation for his textbooks. Mike has been writing for over 35 years and currently has fifteen books in print. His books have been awarded both Texty and McGuffey awards from TAA.

Mike is a member of both the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America and the Text and Academic Authors Association, and received the TAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. His influence in the field of mathematics extends to his four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Michael III, who also teaches college mathematics, and who is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan, who is a sales director for a college textbook publishing company; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

Kathleen Miranda, Ed.D from St. John's University, is an Emeritus Associate Professor of the State University of New York (SUNY) where she taught for 25 years. Kathleen is a recipient of the prestigious New York State Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and particularly enjoys teaching mathematics to underprepared and fearful students.  In addition to her extensive classroom experience, Kathleen has worked an accuracy reviewer and solutions author on several mathematics textbooks, including Michael Sullivan’s Brief Calculus and Finite Mathematics. Kathleen’s goal is to help students unlock the complexities of calculus and appreciate its many applications.
 
Kathleen has four children: Edward, a plastic surgeon in San Francisco, James, an emergency medicine physician in Philadelphia, Kathleen, a chemical engineer, working on vaccines, and Michael, a management consultant specializing in corporate strategy.

So good!! A must read for Fielding fans!!

So beautiful that it will make you cry. This is Kim Fielding's best work, I'm telling you.

I'm going to tell you folks a story about patience.

Once, I started a book by one of my favorite authors. It was a little slow going at first, and I wasn't sure if I was going to connect to the main characters. I was pretty sure that it was going to be a middling read for me, despite the gorgeous prose. But I stuck with it and, little by little, it just grew on me.

At about 30% in I was feeling pretty good about it. By 50% in, I had a serious crush on the story. At 75%, it was love. By 100% I was crying because I didn't want to let it go.

This is absolutely not a razzle-dazzle story. It isn't in your face in any way. The sex is hot and sweet, but you wouldn't read it for that alone, and there is almost zero drama in the story. It is simply a character study of two men in a small town who have lived and lost and how they come to fit in each others lives.

I'm not kidding when I say it isn't action-packed. These guys spend most of their time tending bar, fixing things around the inn where the story takes place, doing mundane chores, really. But you know what? You will love reading about the mundane stuff because, at the same time, the real stuff is happening beneath the surface.

Jimmy... just such a complex, perfectly imagined character. He starts off the book coming across as a aloof drifter, but then he becomes so much more. We find out what shaped him, and I simply loved having only his POV. Sometimes single POV books can be tricky, but it worked here.

Shane, he just stole my heart. Disabled from an accident, he is still unflaggingly brave, loyal, interesting... I can't stop thinking of positive descriptors. I loved his sense of community and family and how willing he was to open his heart to Jimmy.

If you are a Kim Fielding fan or a fan of well-crafted, slow burn stories, you must pick this one up. I can't stop thinking about the characters and you won't be able to either.

This is a quietly unfolding love story which was a nice change of pace. Highly recommended.

Jimmy’s been a drifter since he was fourteen years old. Bad decisions, stupid mistakes, no relationships, no loving family or friends, moving from job to job, town to town, never staying more than a few weeks or a season, with never more than a few bucks to his name. It may not be anyone else’s idea of a good life, but Jimmy has no regrets and no plans to change any time soon. Jimmy picks up Tom, a dying man trying to get to Rattlesnake, CA to deliver a letter to his estranged son Shane. Tom doesn’t make it to Rattlesnake, but Jimmy feels the need to deliver his letter whether Shane.

Jimmy finds Shane Little in the old west mining town of Rattlesnake that has managed to retain some of the 1850’s feel from when the town was built. Shane is the bartender at the Rattlesnake Inn, which is owned by his Aunt. He’s lived his whole life there, has a large and loving family and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. He moves slowly, with obvious difficulty, has scars on his face, but is friendly and spends the evening talking with Jimmy at the bar. Jimmy decides not to hand over the letter and possibly disrupt Shane’s life, but to just keep moving on. Too bad his old car has other ideas. The next morning Jimmy finds himself sitting in the diner with a few bucks, no car and a talkative Shane, who is eager to hear Jimmy’s stories of the road and help solve his immediate problems with a job as the Inn’s handyman. Although the itch to leave is always there, one day turns to two and Jimmy finds a new reason to stay each morning, most of which relate back to Shane.

There is beauty in the simplicity of this story, with writing that puts you right there in the town of Rattlesnake. Told from Jimmy’s point of view, the majority of the action takes place in the Inn, revolving around the day-to-day tasks there. As Jimmy and Shane get to know each other better we hear more of his stories from the road, although it’s hard to be sure which are true and which are a bit embellished. While he may tell a tale or two, at the heart of it Jimmy is a good man who has never had anyone on his side and doesn’t think he deserves what Shane has and wants to give. The smallest acts of trust and care are almost enough to bring Jimmy to tears. Shane is sure he has Jimmy figured out and that Jimmy’s love of his drifting lifestyle is only because he never has had any reason to stay somewhere.

Shane is a wonderful character that I couldn’t help but love from the start. He sees himself as broken inside and out, but he is kind, generous and outgoing. His life drastically changed ten years ago and he has most of the town looking out for him and that includes making sure Jimmy knows not to hurt him. Jimmy is almost immediately caught up in Shane’s spell. Watching Jimmy fall for Shane and the town and feel a bit of hope then immediately fear it shows how vulnerable he really is.

“Well, but this was hope, wasn’t it? And Jimmy knew perfectly well what hope became: bitter ashes. Eventually Shane would see Jimmy’s true self and then he’d turn away in anger and disgust. And Jimmy … he couldn’t survive another turning away.”

Kim Fielding’s writing is so easy to read, I was quickly immersed in the small world she created. This is a quietly unfolding love story without epic drama or angst, and Jimmy and Shane are both layered characters with engaging personalities and great chemistry. It was a nice change of pace and I highly recommend it.

Kim Fielding is an extraordinary storyteller. This is the story of two incredibly endearing but damaged men. Jimmy, a drifter, who gave a lift to an old man who died in his car leaving a letter Jimmy took as his duty to deliver to his son in Rattlesnake. And Shane, a bartender at an inn who gives him a job and a place to stay—he has been in an accident that ended his life as he knew it and forced him to find a new place in the world and accept his limitations. Jimmy has been unable to stay anywhere for years, he feels trapped and has to keep moving. Now, at Rattlesnake, with Shane, a trust and sense of belonging begin to develop, scaring him senseless. This is the story of their journey, told beautifully, it carries you with them, with their insecurities, their tenderness and their fears. It is a must read!

A Fascinating History of Port Royal

With its wealth of detail & eyewitness accounts (numerous direct quotes from visitors, residents, and administrators of Port Royal), this book is a treasure trove for anyone who wants to learn about the same wicked town familiar to the pirates & buccaneers of the late 17th century.
Having recently traveled to Port Royal, it was still difficult to imagine the city in its heyday. The city (now actually a sleepy village) and its surroundings has been changed so much by disaster (three major earthquakes, more than a dozen hurricanes, and several fires) and natural evolution. The biggest change came when two-thirds of the city sunk under the water in the 1692 earthquake. It's as if the pre-1692 city existed in an alternate universe, with the boundaries slightly shifted, and the veil of time cast in between. The accounts in this book help to lift several of the veils to provide a glimpse of what the famous Port Royal might have looked like - the city where buccaneers walked the street, the "Sodom & Gomorrah" of the New World, a city that rivaled Boston in size and shipping traffic.
The 1st edition of this book was published in 1974, but this 2nd edition has been able to include many of the findings of archeological work and research done in the interim. Fascinating tales abound within it's pages about the ship captain turned pirate who easily escaped from the prison, about the return home of the governor's widow, of the petty infighting between Lt. Governor Morgan (the famous ex-pirate) and new Governor Lord Vaughn, and much more.
See plans of the streets and buildings of Port Royal. Read of everyday life in this city, of the grandeur of gala receptions and celebrations for the King's birthday, of the various religions represented (including Quakers and Jews). Fird hand descriptions of actual taverns and brothels are given, including accounts of the available activities and entertainments.
Following an entire chapter on the 1692 earthquake, subsequent chapters tell of the strategic importance held by this English naval port where many famous British officers were stationed (including Admiral Nelson), on up to modern times.
The various charts and lists in the Appendices are fascinating to pour over: names of ships, tradesmen and craftsmen, ministers, and even taverns. While full of details, footnotes, and references, this book is written in a very approachable fashion, and will interest the casual reader as well as the scholar. Whether researching for an historical book, a fictional story, movie, documentary, or developing a reenacted persona, if you have any interest in the history of Port Royal, or of Jamaica in general, I can not recommend this book enough.

Sanford Schram argues in this new book that each shift produces its own path dependency even as it represents yet another iteration of what he (somewhat ironically) calls "ordinary capitalism," where the changes in market logic inevitably produce changes in the structure of the state. In today's ordinary capitalism, neoliberalism is the prevailing political-economic logic that has contributed significantly to unprecedented levels of inequality in an already unequal society. As the new normal, neoliberalism has marketization of the state as a core feature, heightening the role of economic actors, especially financiers, in shaping public policy. The results include increased economic precarity among the general population, giving rise to dramatic political responses on both the Left and the Right (Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Party in particular). Schram examines neoliberalism's constraints on politics as well as social and economic policy and gives special attention to the role protest politics plays in keeping alive the possibilities for ordinary people to exercise political agency. The Return of Ordinary Capitalism concludes with political strategies for working through--rather than around--neoliberalism via a radical, rather than status-quo-reinforcing, incrementalism.
