Concise and effective rulebook for your new leadership role!

I am an executive coach and often work with managers and executives on career or leadership transitions. This book nails it. It is a very concise and organized view of what to do when you are in your new role to succeed quickly and effectively. My favorite quote "If you plan to show up and do your best, you're still thinking like an individual contributor."

A Blessedly Short Little Book With A Lot of Succinct Advice

There must be 300 books written about how to succeed as a new leader. Why would you buy this one?
1. It's short and to the point. Rollins covers pretty much everything you need to know in just over 100 pages.
2. It's simple. No business jargon. It's written in a breezy, accessible style.
3. It addresses more than just success at work. Rollins discusses subjects like not taking yourself so seriously, how to enjoy your work, and how to be a force for good. It's not all about work performance.
4. If you want to read more, the author has included additional resources and articles on her website that expand on the two pages (yes! only 2 pages!) she spends on each rule.

It's hard to break out of obscurity in the book business. Everyone can (and is) writing books. This one is actually worth reading.

Common Sense Advice All Leaders Need

I just read "42 Rules for Your New Leadership Role." Then I reread it. This book is dynamite!

Author Pam Fox Rollin gets it about leadership, and how to transition into your new leadership role. The book is easy to read -- and use. Its format, 42 short essays on making the transition to leadership, makes it a valuable resource for new and experienced leaders. It is the very best "how to" guide for leaders I've come across -- and I've read a ton of leadership books.

I particularly like Rule 4, "Draft Your Strategic One-Pager." Rollin's advice, "Summarize you company's strategy and your team's role," is solid, but often overlooked common sense. She asks some thought provoking questions and suggests that the reader answer them in a one page summary.

Rule 15, "Show People How to Work With You," is another great piece of common sense leadership advice. Rollin says, "Often new leaders neglect to tell their people what they want, and then are frustrated when they don't get it." This is right out of Performance Management 101, but many leadership don't follow this advice. Successful leaders make it easy for people to work with and for them.

Rule 30, "Grow More Leaders," is another of my favorites. In my experience Rollin is correct when she says, "If you develop a reputation as a great boss, you'll have a steady supply of great people who want to work for you." People flock to leaders who have a track record of growing subordinates and getting them promoted. I love her advice on championing your people: simple but powerful ideas like "bring them to meetings" and "speak well of them."

Every one of the 42 rules in this book contains terrific advice, presented in a simple, straightforward manner. The book is better for the personal stories Rollin shares throughout. By the way, she follows her own advice. Rule 21 is "Tell a Good Story."

"42 Rules for Your New Leadership Job" is a must read for new and experienced leaders. Do yourself a favor. Get a copy, read it and put its common sense advice to work.

A book like this has been long waited for. There is much here that is new to me and the fact that Irish theatre has such long roots is interesting. This is a good overview on Irish theatre but it is heavy at times and difficult to read. That is why I give it four stars and not five.

About the Author
Kenneth J. Meier is the Charles H. Gregory Chair in Liberal Arts and Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University. He is also Professor of Public Management in the Cardiff School of Business, Cardiff University (Wales). He is a former editor of the AMERICAN JOURNAL OF POLITICAL SCIENCE (1994-1997), a former associate editor of THE JOURNAL OF POLITICS (1991-1994), and the JOURNAL OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION RESEARCH AND THEORY (2000-2009). He served as the president of the Southwest Political Science Association; the American Political Science Associations sections on State Politics and Policy, Public Policy, and Public Administration; the Public Management Research Association; and the Midwest Political Science Association. In 2006, he received the John Gaus Award for career contributions to public administration scholarship; and in 2010, the C. Dwight Waldo Award from the American Society for Public Administration. He currently lives with the love of his life, Diane Jones Meier, in Bryan, Texas, and spends his free time comparing the merits of California zinfandels with Australian Shirazes.

John Bohte is currently Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (PhD, Texas A&M University). Dr. Bohte enjoys teaching courses on public budgeting, statistics, and state politics.

Brief introduction to policymaking

Meier's book skims over policymaking in the bureaucracy and focuses mainly on the federal bureaucracy. This slim volume has good examples but one would hope for more depth considering the book's hefty price. In addition, the author's liberal slant can be a bit distracting. However, it does present some interesting ideas for public policy students to consider.

Full disclosure, Gustavo Dantas is my Jiu Jitsu coach, but let me tell you why he is my coach. I am 56 years old and started training Jiu Jitsu in 2003 at age 44. I began wrestling at age 12 and wrestled at the jr. high, high school, college and post college levels. I have also coached at the kids, high school and jr college levels. My great fortune was being coached by the very best wrestling coaches this country has to offer; Don Klostreich, Ronald "Tune" Eastin, Mu Chang and Bobby Douglas, these coaches are the measuring stick I've applied when evaluating any coach and they were the measuring stick used when I chose Gustavo Dantas to be my Jiu Jitsu coach. My last wrestling competition was at age 46 the same year I competed in my first Jiu Jitsu competition. I continue to compete regularly and I continually need good coaching.
