A Reading the Paranormal Review

I have to say that I've enjoyed everything J.L. Bryan has written (hoists the fangirl flag with a rousing cheer) and I'm REALLY digging on this new series. Ghosts, mayhem, quirky characters with intriguing back stories, and DANGER, ELLIE JORDAN! DANGER!

One thing I'm enjoying is how the past ties in with the present. Ellie has to piece together what happened long ago to figure out how it ties in with her current case. She's working off historical documents and a goodly dose of intuition (although she'd tell you she follows the facts, but I like the leaps she makes) to figure out who's who and why they're acting as they are. And, yes, she does follow the facts more than she intuits. She treats her ghost hunting as a science, even when she invites the resident psychic into her investigation. I just wonder if her run-in with a malevolent spirit when she was younger makes her more open to seeing connections that others might brush aside.

Speaking of the resident psychic, Ellie's love life is sort of a barren wasteland. While I'm not holding my breath that she's going to go for him (that might make things awkward down the line), I am hoping she finds someone who can understand what she does and why she does it.

It might be nice to have someone to lean on after getting thrown down a flight of stairs or two during a rough case.

Bottom line: I'm loving this series and can't wait to see what crazy ghostly shenanigans Ellie and her crew uncover next.

The details are engrossing, bringing the ghost to life and making it feel as if you're being watched!

I couldn't wait to fall back into this world and go on ghostly adventures with Ellie! This time around it looks like our ghost hunters are dealing with a family of ghost and they're dangerous. At first the kids may have seemed innocent but they cause just as much trouble as their father. Those ghost children brought chills up my spine, seriously intense when they're trying to convince the little boy they're haunting to kill himself, just as much as their studded belt wielding father did. These ghost are a lot more physical than the group from the first book, a little light can't scare them away.

Ellie dives head first into yet another job and as we get deeper into the mystery we find out it isn't as simple as we thought. I liked the twist that we got, it definitely through me. I just wasn't expecting it and I love that in a mystery!

Cold Shadows hooked me from the beginning, just like the first one did! It's action packed full of ghostly encounters, having me not being able to put the book down! The details are engrossing, bringing the ghost to life and making it feel as if you're being watched! What fun when you're alone and it's dark outside ;). I seriously couldn't get enough of this book and the characters are just as fun, love them! Ellie and Stacey sure can have interesting conversations, they can definitely get me to laugh out loud.

Overall what another fun tale! I can't wait to read the next one! Mr. Bryan sure knows how to make you crave for more! The ending was great, showing that maybe there is light at the end of Ellie's dark tunnel. With more people coming into her life it looks like she'll finally learn how to open up. I just couldn't give this a five because I'm just dying to get more into Ellie's head! Hopefully we'll finally get that in the next one!

Don't read this in bed

Ghost hunter Ellie Jordan’s newest case involves a house built in 1841 that has a lot of activity. Things get moved around or thrown, water dripping through the ceiling when there are no pipes above it, facets turning on… The house is dark, depressing and getting expensive for the family of 4 living there as house sitters for the past couple of years as they need to keep up the maintenance. Finding out who and why is both interesting and dangerous as this group of ghosts have the ability to kill you.

While I can’t say my heart was racing, the tempo of my pulse did pick up in a number of scenes, and as someone who has had quite a few experiences with the paranormal, there is no way I could have faced –and still functioned—the activity and entities described. Wow.

The who, why and resolution were kind of surprising. The characters, especially the teenage daughter and 8 year-old son are believable and likeable, and it would be cool to see them again.

I like the fact that Ellie, her tech assistant Stacey and their psychic consultant Jacob are not portrayed as either kick-butt or fearless; just determined to get the job done, even when shaking in their shoes.

it works

I'm a new transition to triathlons. This book works well for me because I'm prepared to accept the information the book has to offer. The information is objective and the training methods presented appear well organized with technical reasoning backing up the new concepts I learned here. I feel the author is genuinely concerned about the readers success and therefore disagree with other reviewers comments' that the there is too much (unnecessary) training. My thoughts on this matter are that Triathletes need a sufficient amount of training to efficiently compete and I think once again the author backs up the reasons why the training is important . My interpretation of the general training outline presented is that this will prepare one well for the stresses of half ironman competition, but one can adjust up or down from there to suit their racing needs. For a 1994 copyright, this book is well worth the money because the facts, figures, and methods being used appear to be genuine by even today's standards. If you wish to find something exactly for you please visit your local full service health club and pay several hundred dollars for a genuine taylored plan, this is a serious statement for those being extremely serious about this sport. But for the novice like me, this book tells me everything I need to know at this point. See you on the course friends...

The gospel when it first hit press; outdated now

This was the first book I owned on the subject and could not believe the amount of training that the authors recommended one need do to finishi a triathlon. Given that the book is a bit old, I believe that these recommendations are a sign of those times. Nowadays, people know that one can do very well at the sport of triathlon on significantly less training, and I point the interested reader in the direction of books such as "Time-saving ..." and Sleamaker's "SERIOUS Training...". These books are equally scientific, but do not put as much emphasis on having to cover so many miles, but rather inform you on how to spend whatever time you actually have to train.
I would not recommend this book to a newcomer, nor to a seasoned triathlete anymore, but a few years ago I might have...

Too technical for beginners

I am a previous distance runner (high school and college) who also enjoys mountain biking and recreational swimming. I have never competed in a triathalon before. For a beginner, this book focused too much on the technical aspects of training for professional triathletes.
Much of the book focused on complex training cycles and tracking methods. I had hoped to see recommended programs for beginners, such as base level resistance training to increase muscle tone and endurance, and base level cardiovascular workouts, followed by guidance for moving to the next level.
I also would have liked a listing of organizations in my area that organize triathalons.
For the most part, this book assumes the reader is already familiar with triathalons and training. I would recommend beginners look elsewhere.

Highly valuable material

if you are new to the concept of Experiential Learning then this is a fantastic book. Even if you are familiar with it and just want to know more, it is incredibly useful. Some people, like a former manager of mine, think that EL is just limited to everything being an activity. It is far more than that and this book helps you understand the formula for creating effective EL training. I would say it is a great book for both instructors and instructional designers alike. Forget reading the rest of the reviews. Get this book. It is absolutely worth it and chock full of value for any level of EL practitioner.

Well, I've been here before...

It was when I finished Time Trap. And frankly the frustrated sentiment is identical. I want Time Lock now! I'm not typically a fan of any sci-fi, most often because I'm short on imagination and unable to picture complicated characters that are rendered of the authors imagination. These books, however, somehow reached out and grabbed me and I was hooked from the first. They pace well and keep you reading. And I would definitely say that Micah Caida has the art of the cliffhanger whittled down to an actual science.

Now I'm eager to see how it finishes. Will Rayen get her man and memory back? Will Gabby find her place in either world? Will Tony finally be able to realize his dream of taking care of his brother? I want to know now! Take your Time, ladies. We all need this final installment to be the culmination of everything. Personally, I hope Rayen kicks SEOH's arse back to 1942. That's my vote. Happy reading! And to Micah Caida, happy writing!

I don't care if your young or old this second book is great. These authors won't let you down. I read it in two days because I couldn't put it down. They get you to remember what it was like to be young, and make you realize you don't have to older to be heroic. The only sad thing is now I have to wait for the next one.

Nonstop action and emotional conflicts

Though the main characters are all teenagers in The Red Moon trilogy, my adult mind easily became riveted in the many tricky dilemmas this spirited trio faced. From dire predicaments to challenging emotional issues, these three are still making difficult decisions in the second book and often there is not a satisfying choice. The writing duo known as Micah Caida has truly created a most unusual storyline plus unique characters, and outcomes are never assured until ever single second plays out. TIME RETURN is notable science fiction with lots of unexpected twists.

After waking up with no memory of her past, Rayen was taken to a school where many students study varied subjects and even live. Most of those at the school think of her as rather strange, but she had managed to make friends with two other teenagers. By chance, the three somehow traveled through time to a place known as the Red Moon sphere, a world in their future. Even though they managed to make it back to the present, Rayen has vowed to return and help the MystiKs, a group made up of young children and teenagers under the age of eighteen. They are relentlessly persecuted by another group, one which would like for every MystiK to be annihilated.

Rayen hopes the special powers she possesses will help once again when she revisits to the Red Moon sphere. She knows the place contains countless mysterious dangers, but she does not plan on letting the leader of the group down. Callan came to mean much to her in a short time, and there is no way Rayen will let him fight an enemy without her assistance. However, upon arriving back on the sphere, she discovers much destruction took place while she was gone and Callan’s actions are very confusing. While some believe her presence brings even more threats to the MystiKs, there is no way Rayen will leave the vulnerable group unless forced.

There are so many variables affecting the life of Rayen, regardless of what time period she is living in. With so much of her memory missing, she often does not know what path to follow and can only hope any responses are right. Although she is only a teenager, many of the decisions she has to make are extremely difficult yet they must be made. With so many lives affected by whatever she decides, I felt her unease over what to do on so many occasions. The ordeals that just keep coming her way could be disastrous if Rayen chooses incorrectly, and her anxiety is clearly obvious from her inner thoughts to her actions.

The relationship Rayen has with her two friends from school is just like a normal teenager at times. Disagreements occur and minds must be changed, yet their friendship endures throughout it all. The connection between Rayen and Callan is also comparable to two dating teens sometimes. Even though most young people would not have to make such drastic choices, they do have to think about matters that involve other individuals along with their own desires. The peril in the story is very real, and I often held my breath until a scene concluded. With its dramatic ending, the third book in the series looks to be even more intense. Micah Caida has crafted a notable science fiction series with believable characters and a rewarding plot. TIME RETURN has one risk-taking adventure after another and is continuously entertaining.
