Great advanced introduction

Based on the small number of reviews here, this work appears to be relatively unknown and unsung here. Allow me to contribute a hearty "thumbs up" here because I feel it is a great packaging of well-selected basics and intuition. If you are a student advancing in physics and dynamics, I hope it at least gets on your list of things to check out.

I personally love this book! However, I am long beyond (in time, if not in learning) introductory physics; so let me try to make an informed recommendation.

I think this should be your SECOND waves book. I can see how readers using it for a first exposure to waves or partial differential equations can feel challenged, as it is concise and often leaves you alone. And in return for its conciseness it treats a wider and more advanced set of topics than I remember in my "first" introduction books: Eg, nice first tastes of nonlinearity, solitons, water waves.

But at this slightly advanced level of this book, it has a lot to offer, and I find it unique:

- The topic selection is terrific! Just to give you an example: It provides an introductory treatment of the Klein-Gordon equation (and I don't know why other basic books don't), nicely illustrated in the book as a system involving something like a set of mattress box springs. If you happen to go on to more advanced work, eg quantum physics and the origin of mass, you might think back to this "mattress" picture and have some extra basic intuition about it. This is just one example of how I find that the topics selected by this book "fall into place" elsewhere in my travels.

- The book sticks to an introductory level on the wide variety of topics and uses the short space to convey fundamental intuition. It is certainly not a thorough / detailed / last word treatment on any of the topics-- but I would not want to bore myself reading such technical detail cover to cover. Instead, I can almost imagine an author that very much sees the big picture-- bigger than can fit into many books--, carefully chose the most important aspects and intuitions to convey, and then enthusiastically, perhaps impatiently, tried to compress and convey it as fast as possible.

Lastly, as a "later" book you study on the subject, its conciseness and speed might be just right-- eg, good for a fast track conceptual review without fluff. What was my "first" book on this subject? I don't even remember now. But this book is still on my shelf, on my mind, and I'm thankful enough to write a review!

Whatever you do, do not read this book

As some people have mentioned, this book is impossible to read. The derivations are unclear, the content lacks motivation, and the dull writing style makes the book a real chore to read. Do yourself a favor and read a different book on waves. Try Waves by Frank S. Crawford.

Great Article on Mu

I have read some of the books on Mu. This article really connects a lot of the dots on the concept of the lost continent of Mu and adds some surprising new thoughts on the subject. It explores discoveries in DNA, language and symbols that support the belief of it's existence. I like that it relates Mu to the cultures of ancient Peru and the teachings of Alberto Villoldo on Laika Shamanism.

Great addition to any Mu scholar

This is a great book for putting a lot of information about the lost continent of Mu together in one short, easy to read book. Clear writing, by George Schwimmer Ph.D. makes this book a pleasure to read. I would use it as an introduction to the subject since most other books on the subject are dense and filled with the style of writing from decades ago(where apparently people were a lot smarter). Schwimmer footnotes no the last page so you can start into a more detailed study if you want to. I've been into this subject for years, but I still enjoyed that great job Schwimmer had done in summing it all up for me. On the cover of his book you can see one of the sacred symbols of Mu which I find quite intriguing.

It's amazing that legend has Mu being destroyed by way of volcanoes and its people moving to Peru as one of their places of refuge. Now in the news we have a volcano in Peru putting on a grand show, so maybe history is repeating itself, or as Mark Twain once said, 'history might not repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme."

One interesting thing I learned is that the Dia de los Muertos in Mexico(one of the places the Lumerian ran to) which means Day of the Dead, sounds a lot like Murder. Could the whole sinking of Mu been because of a war, which might have set off the volcanoes? I don't know if we'll ever really know but language does sometimes hold clues.

"The Rig Veda, considered to be the oldest literary work on the planet(prior to 3000 B.C.?), tells of a sunken land called Rutas--an immense continent far to the east of India and home to a people who worshipped the sun. Rutas was torn apart by volcanic unheaval and dropped to the ocean depths. Fragments of the continent remained as Indonesia and the Pacific Islands." location 59

Enjoying the read, but...

It is very frustrating that none of the images which coincide with some of the text do not appear in the kindle- for- ipad version ( could be different for other kindle reading devices, I don't know). I have been able to find some examples of things online but not all, which can make for an annoying read when there are whole chapters dedicated to symbols and such.

Regardless, a very compelling argument - I feel pretty swayed.

This marital event, known as The Wedding that Changed the South or The Greatest Ancestral Wedding of 1888 resulted in more kinfolk coming together for an event than the whole town of Ashland could tally. In 1929, Eliza Jane McDonald-Reaves died. She left a manuscript underneath the feather tick mattress of her bed, which consisted of many years of her writings. More than 80 years later, Linda Reaves sensed that her ancestors were calling. At the age of 14, she received training through the Higher Ability High School Students Program of Art, Music and Science Appreciation at Rust College, Holly Springs, Mississippi. Linda lives in Memphis, Tennessee with her son, Nathaniel Reaves.

Linda Reaves--a voice that summons, a voice to be heard

As in Mildred Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and Claude McKay's "My Mother," Linda Reaves’ Threads to Which I Belong crosses into that deeply spiritual place where blood and soil become inseparable within the bonds of love and family. Linda Reaves’ voice as an author is remarkably strong. I am reminded of the time travel in Octavia Butler’s Kindred when I consider the portrayal of Eliza Jane within the story and then the “revealing” of Linda Reaves herself in the epilogue. It is as if Eliza Jane and the author live simultaneously, which is intriguing. I only wish the book were two hundred pages longer. Reaves may have to write a sequel to satisfy her readers whose appetites-- I am certain-- she has whet. Long live Eliza Jane along with the entire McDonald-Reaves family!

Truly Inspirational

Treat yourself to this....my good friend Linda Darlene Reaves wrote this inspirational piece. I remember listening to her often times when the voices of her ancestors were poking and prodding and pushing her to investigate her family history. Pushed her down to Lake Reaves and the families LAND and all the treasures that would be revealed there. This work may push you towards your elders so that you might know the richness of your own family history. Great work from a truly talented author who has a wonderful way of threading words together.

Precious, Priceless & Perfectly told!

Precious, priceless & perfectly told! I read my copy & purchased another for my mom. Ms Reaves brings you into the lives of her family during a time of history that her people suffered deeply. Yet it's not the suffering that you remember but the love strength & perseverance. The questions that Ms Reaves leaves her readers with at the end of her book make you ponder & seek to know your family past history & respect their perseverance.
