Mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking process particularly suited to the rendering of tonal gradations that was used from the 17th through the 19th centuries to create reproductions of paintings. With the widespread adoption of photographic reproductive methods, mezzotint use shifted to the creation of original images. Wax, who is a mezzotint artist, has combined a history of mezzotint with instructions for artists who wish to work in mezzotint today. Like the mezzotint process, Wax's text is painstaking and requires patience to complete, but she provides a wealth of information on one of today's lesser-known printmaking processes. The volume is well illustrated and is suitable for interested laypersons and art historians as well as practicing artists.

Not only is Carol Wax one of the greatest mezzotint artists alive, she has written the best history and lexicon for this fine and old printmaking technique. Reading this book will either make you want to make a mezzotint or purchase one.

This is a very thorough compendium of the history, technical and aesthetic issues surrounding this rich and surprisingly versatile intaglio process. As was mentioned in other reviews Ms. Wax is a master of the techniques and she is particularly adept and thorough presenting the essentials for making good grounds. This has been enormously useful to me in teaching this technique to my students. Most printmaking technique books offer, at best, a cursory examination of the process an are typically thin on important details like inks, wiping, papers, metal types, etc, etc.

The book is apparently out of print. I managed to purchase a fine hardback copy with a stamped "Columbus Public Library" on the paper edge from one of amazon's many used book partners for a very reasonable price. No university printmaking studio or program should be without this book, it's that good!

As an added bonus there is a wealth of historical and contemporary mezzotint works including those by Ms. wax and many, many others. If this wasn't such an esoteric art form I would recommend a new edition to include even more contemporary works.

'She don't make me feel like you, on the real she ain't you...you, you, you'

Alazo Moore rokked your soul in V1 with his Billy Dee Williams suave-nicity and a swag that superseded the Richter Scale. Well, fasten your seat belts with a deadbolt because Trent Davis, hmmph!!! Prepare yourself to be enamored with the passion and plight of this charismatic d-boy, this doting dad, this MIA husband that has arisen from the dead...one even calls him a 'zombie.' He left us with erratic emotions in V1...in V2- he will massacre all judgments and prejudiced opinions on this new trek of an authentic hustla. Zombie portrays stoic and bland...but the emotions Mr. Davis will elicit will electrify, electrocute, and burn every thread off of any mummie's garbs.

V1 brought us mountains of griefs to bear...unbearable heartache and just when we didn't think we could lift our heads...we were blessed with a miracle showing that GOD did indeed love the Bell Family. Then we are slapped with the revelation that the dead had indeed arisen although death never captured our charming Trent. Multifacted Trent Davis is in Italy playing house with his firstborn, his only son & the needy Gianna all for the sake of knowing his only son, his firstborn child and one last hope that one day...someday he may see his beloved 3 Bell Babies. Sounds twisted...what about you living but not because you feel that void, that hole that only one woman could fill. You live with the guilt of what your choices caused the loves of your life. You've lost so much and although you are alive, you are indeed the walking dead. Across the world, a heartbroken wife is trying to piece together her life without the only man she's ever loved and live for the sake of the 3 babies they created all in the name of Real Love. Meanwhile Val and Alazo are engaged, living the fabulous life of the marvelous in a mansion decorated in Valerie Bell's expensive taste, doting on their love child, Alana and welcoming Quishawn into their immaculate world. What happens when all presumptions are reversed? What happens when what you've prayed for...begged GOD for...wished upon many a star for...actually is granted? Another BANGER!!!!

Takerra Allen is a phenomenal writer with skills that words cannot describe! V2: More Power is a great story. Ms. Allen paints vivid pictures with her words that allow readers to feel what each character feels. Without giving anything away, I loved that each character experienced a conflict that allowed them to either grow or stand up and face each challenge like a man or woman. Each character had to exhibit strength in order to fight battles that could have ruined them. This book was filled with wisdom and I found myself highlighting passages that contained a message or a life lesson. This book was entertaining, it was heart wrenching, its was riveting, it was though provoking, it was emotional. V2: More Power was excellent!

Totally Worth The Wait!!!

Words can't describe how much I really enjoyed this book. Takerra is a phenomenal writer with the ability to transform mere words to create a lasting impression. These are not just characters in a book but people you become connected to through out the story. I personally begged for V2 (with FB messages to prove) because I knew Takerra would deliver. No Spoilers Here.... But I will say you will not be disappointed. Every question is answered and every thought is confirmed. This is definitely my best read in 2015! With that said, if you are reading reviews to determine if you should purchase this book.... Buy it Today! Oh and "Do Better". DBGrant

This book helped my four-year old.

My 4-year-old son is very bright and imaginative, but has a hard time focusing on tasks -- as a result, his small-motor skills were beginning to lag behind. This workbook helped him develop skills in drawing shapes, solving puzzles, and beginning to write letters.
The workbook has bright pictures and a variety of actitivies. Parents (or kids) can choose to skip around the book if the child gets tired of one kind of activity. We chose to work straight through, stopping whenever he got tired or frustrated. The activities are challenging but not impossible.
One caveat -- are preschoolers really expected to know how to write the alphabet in upper and lower case? They learn how in this book, but I seem to remember taking that up in the first grade, oh a million or so years ago.

fun, but frustrating

My son was almost 4 when we got this a couple of months ago, and he really likes it (still does), but it's a bit frustrating in the following way: many of the pictures that it uses for learning letters (e.g. "circle the picture that begins with u") are of vocabulary items that 4 year olds don't necessarily know. E.g. for "u" they had a batter and someone who I guessed was an umpire. But my 4-year-old doesn't know what an umpire is, even though he's cognitively just at the right level for this book in the sense that he finds it fun to do, and when he knows what the pictures are he can pick the right one. Another page had a frilly heart as one of the choices for "v", and you were supposed to know that the heart was a valentine. My kid has a pretty big vocabulary for a 4-year-old, and knows the word valentine, but it just was a little abstract for him. The result is that I have to help him a lot, and I think it'd be more fun for him if he felt he could do it himself. If anyone knows of a similar book with more age-appropriate vocabulary pictures, it'd be great if they could post that in a review, since he does really seem to enjoy the activities in the book, and views getting to do the book as a treat.

Highly Recommend for Pre-K

My son just turned three in August, but he has already completed this book. We did a few pages everyday - I think we spent a couple of months on it. He is now able to write upper and lowercase letters, and can do simple math concepts, such as greater vs. lesser, which group has more...there are mazes, coloring activities, and a variety of lessons to teach shapes, sizes, counting, writing, etc.

What I liked best about this book is the different phrases that they use in the instructions. My son learned the relationship between phrases "which ones match" and "where does it belong", "which one is different" and "which one is not the same"...just to name a couple. My son immediately applied what he learned from the book to his everyday activities, so I know that he did absorb some, if not all, the lessons.

Since this book is a combination of smaller books from School Zone, it's not necessary to buy the others unless your child has trouble with a particular area. My son struggled with the pages dealing with "beginning sounds," so I bought him the book that is just activities to teach beginning sounds.

I prefer School Zone to all other preschool workbook series, with the exception of Kumon.

A book written to be readable and useful

This is both a terrific introduction and a serious deepening of wound care for the healthcare professional. Physicians: never mind that it is not authored by fellow physicians. It is obviously authored by real-world clinical experts with a passion for mixing the right amount of scientific underpinning with generous portions of "here's how you do it" down-to-earth grittiness. I am a physician who is trained in both surgery and infectious disease, and I would trust myself in the authors' care anytime -- whether as student or as patient. No one writes this clearly or lays out a book this thoughtfully without having the rare "right stuff".

Good source of information

I am using this to try to get my WOCN certification, but even if I don't succeed I feel I have gotten a lot of good information from this book. I think this is a good reference for any nurse with an interest in wound care.

I actually liked this book better than the yellow book that most people recommend using (granted I have both). I found this very helpful to study for my CWS along with the usual yellow wounds book.
