All The Evil of This World, by Jared Dillian

There are humans behind the big, bad vilified banks, there are humans behind the calculations of Wall Street, there are humans behind all the legal and illegal financial machinations in the news--they are not always the best humans, and they are not always the worst humans, but All The Evil Of This World tells their stories with abundant curiosity, empathy, and honesty.

On March 2nd, 2000, the technology company 3Com spun off its insanely profitable hand-held computer subsidiary, Palm. It was one of the most fascinatingly high profile and complex and bungled trades in history, but All The Evil Of This World isn't about the millions and millions of dollars that instantly came into play, it's about seven separate voices from seven separate individuals (an ambitious low-level clerk fresh out of school, a drug-addicted, party-throwing broker with bad taste and gross amounts of money, a seemingly infallible hedge fund manager tortured by his own good luck, to name a few) and the 3Com/Palm trade is what weaves their stories together. They all collide into it and out of it, and it sometimes unites them, implodes them, saves them, or destroys them.

This book is not for the faint of heart--these characters are just as troubled and intense and volatile as their surroundings, and the writing pulls not a single punch--but it's an unrelenting examination into a cast of characters that we rarely examine fairly or patiently, and who we often find it easy to dehumanize. The people who inhabit this world aren't cartoon heroes or villains--as it turns out, people who happen to handle large amounts of money for a living--are just people, with shortcomings, just like us.

Review
"The book's strengths largely lie in its disparate viewpoints. The characters are drawn realistically, their actions driven by their motivations. By examining a real-life example so bizarre that it's still studied in business school, Dillian creates a Glengarry Glen Ross mood that connects these characters while exposing their industry as the house of cards it turned out to be...those interested in discovering what this monstrous institution looks like from the inside will find their worst nightmares realized here." - Blueink Review

"Jared Dillian's first novel is like a massive blast of crank. Pure adrenaline. Takes you on a bender that leaves you feeling like you need a hot shower by the time you're done. Required reading for all free market apostles." - John Rolfe, author of MONKEY BUSINESS
"ALL THE EVIL OF THIS WORLD is a novel of high energy and charged prose that charts the vertiginous world of trading and investment with striking intimacy and candor. Wild, sad, and often funny, this multi-voiced book portrays the high-stakes, competitive, and volatile culture that would eventually drive the US economy to near collapse." - Siri Hustvedt, author of THE SUMMER WITHOUT MEN

"Oprah would hate this." -- Turney Duff, New York Times bestselling author of THE BUY SIDE

"ALL THE EVIL OF THIS WORLD is a wild ride that's hard to put down. It's a messy, captivating account of one hot trade. But it's really an absorbing, Bret Easton Ellis-style examination of Wall Street's underbelly at perhaps its ugliest and most exciting time." - Gregory Zuckerman, author of THE GREATEST TRADE EVER and THE FRACKERS

"Jared Dillian has taken a trade that few remember, populated it with unforgettable characters, and produced a book that's impossible to put down. Like a trader with a golden touch, Dillian takes big risks that pay off every time. Invest wisely--buy this book." -- Brian McDonald, author of MY FATHER'S GUN

"Jared Dillian's ALL THE EVIL OF THIS WORLD is a riveting tale of a high-stakes options trade gone bad--or good--depending on each of his many memorable characters' perspectives. This novel is a finely-wrought study of the people who pull the levers behind the curtain of the markets." -- Joe Oestreich, author of HITLESS WONDER and LINES OF SCRIMMAGE

"Jared Dillian pulls off a dizzying magic trick in ALL THE EVIL OF THIS WORLD, his fearless first novel. The story is as exhilarating and terrifying as the apocalyptic trade at its center, the characters swirling around it both gonzo and deeply human. Dillian is no wolf of Wall Street, he's its whirlwind." -- Bill Schweigart, author of THE BEAST OF BARCROFT and NORTHWOODS

"Jared Dillian's examination of a trade now perhaps forgotten, as well as its effect on seven individuals, comes across as scatological Dickens. With first person narrative, at times foreign, at times intimate, Dillian draws an arc from the tangible to the cerebral, all with a very intimate focus. This is far more than a book about finance: All The Evil Of This World will stay with readers because of its brilliant imagery and its prismatic bending of established narratives." -- Jason Brady, author of INCOME INVESTING

"...Those who crave a peek at how the sausage is made in America's corridors of power may enjoy this wild, if bone-jarring ride." - Kirkus Reviews

Pigs Get Slaughtered.
By Teddy the Dog
There are some things you should know before reading this debut novel from Dillian. The biggest, by far, is that Dillian is using an Anti-Plot structure. This is going to put off readers right from the get-go. We are so used to a normal plot arc. I don't care what you are reading or watching. If you are watching a documentary about penguins, they are going to create a protagonist out of that little penguin and arc her from beginning through trials and tribulations to an end. Anti-plot has none of this arc. It's really ambitious of Dillian to chose Anti-plot for his first novel, but he pulls it off. ATEOTW isn't about an arc into evil...Evil just is. It sits there seething and loathing, and I suspect that's why he chose Anti-plot. If you have ever read anything by Dillian, then you also know he is an auto-contrarian. Authority hater supreme. I can imagine this influenced his choice as well. But here ...no arc.. Just miles of rotten-ness.

The second thing you should know is that a healthy background in trading/finance is part and parcel of understanding this book . You may have to get someone to explain parts to you. If Dillian had gone the extra mile and put about 75 pages of explanatory footnotes in this book, it would be mandatory reading for every business college student and first year associate FOREVER. Seriously. There is more insight in here than "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator."

If you can get past these things, ATEOTW reads like a greased pig running through a shoot to its eventual slaughter. Dillian is a great writer. Snappy, with a little bit of snark. The novel is bereft of surprise and an overriding character feeling of, "Geez this is just like so-and so." And that's how it all comes together. The Anti-plot, positions you like a bystander in a pig slaughter house. There is no contrived arc here about Babe the Pig or Napoleon in Animal Farm pulling it all together for the final moment. It's just straight through the shoot...and we all know how it turns out.

An absolute page turner! Your new summer treat...
By Zo Wright
This book is incredibly captivating. As soon as I started reading it, I couldn't put it down and I finished it in two evenings. What surprised me was the way the book was written - not the fact that it was told from the point of view of the various characters, but that it was told through their thoughts. I found it strangely satisfying in a voyeuristic sense.

I literally felt as if I was in those characters minds eavesdropping on their thoughts. At first I questioned whether people could actually have those kinds of thoughts, but then I realized, "hell yeah" - we all think about things that are dirty, vulgar, depraved, not politically correct. And that's the animal part of us. What makes us human is how we act on those thoughts.

Having some familiarity with the world of finance, made it a little easier to read the book, however, you don't need to have any deeper knowledge of how the markets work to get pulled into the raw and absorbing stories of the characters.

I'm already sorry I finished reading the book so fast and now I can't wait for more!.... Let's hope it doesn't take Jared another seven years to write another book. Part 2 anyone???

Intense, Raw and Fast Wall Street Action
By golfguitarsguns
Have been around Wall Street enough to know that there is probably a lot more truth than fiction expressed in these pages (I doubt the author is some sick bast^*d) Really like how Jared develops the motivations, intentions and agendas of each character as well as each of their "real time" point of views related to The Trade. Be ready for intense, rough and raw writing. Not for academics.....pure street smarts. Haven't ever read anything like it and love the fact it is an intense and fast read. Still thinking about it a week later!

It is a challenge to cover both of these issues without compromising on depth and rigor. This book achieves this rare feat and will serve as a ready reference in the post-crisis world for all interest in banking."
Viral V. Acharya, C.V.Starr Professor of Economics, Department of Finance, New York University Stern School of Business

If you want to know the answers to these and other questions about banking, this comprehensive book by an all-star group of scholars provides insightful answers."
Ross Levine, Willis H. Booth Chair in Banking and Finance, University of California, Berkeley

however this was a complete waste of money
By Louisa
I bought this e-book as I'm doing a banking finance paper at uni, however this was a complete waste of money. Firstly, e-book version should be a lot more than $20 cheaper than hardcopy, I don't see how an e-book can cost $140. Also, the content is extremely dull and hard do read, same level of useless detail like a pdf document of your central bank regulations. Had hoped this would be more interesting, like some scholarly articles about banks.

Killer Instinct, by Jane Hamsher

Fresh out of film school, aspiring producer Jane Hamsher and her partner Don Murphy stumbled onto a screenplay by a geeky filmmaker-wannabe named Quentin Tarantino. For $10,000, Jane and Don optioned Natural Born Killers and set off on a two-year roller coaster ride no classroom could have prepared them for. With an outrageous cast of real-life characters including Oliver Stone, Woody Harrelson, Robert Downey, Jr., and Juliette Lewis--along with a slew of film-crew leeches and behind-the-scenes studio pitbulls--Killer Instinct rivals the most mesmerizing, gut-wrenching movie scenes. A wild joyride like no other, Hamsher's tale provides a fresh, insider's perspective on stardom and the real balance of power in Hollywood.

From Library Journal
At the beginning of her tale of the making of a big Hollywood picture, Hamsher finds herself in her bathrobe with the flu and not enough money to pay the rent. She goes on to chronicle the misadventures of her life with business partner Don Murphy as they try to succeed as film producers in Hollywood shortly after graduating from the University of Southern California film school. They live on their passion for movies and lunches with people who may or, more likely, may not be able to help them advance their careers. Finally, their work pays off as they buy the script for Natural Born Killers from then unknown Quentin Tarantino and convince Oliver Stone to direct it, resulting in one of the most controversial films ever made?and a great success for the young producers. Hamsher's style is gritty and to the point, she drops names, and she is unabashedly critical of the Hollywood power players and the men's world she encounters. The reader should know a bit about the film industry before reading this volume, which ultimately would make an interesting film. For academic or public libraries with film collections.?Lisa N. From Kirkus Reviews
This lean, mean, scabrously honest account of the making of Natural Born Killers amply proves the truism that moviemaking is a ``controlled accident.'' What goes on behind the scenes of certain movies is often a better, more involving story than what appears on-screen. Such is certainly the case with the notorious Natural Born Killers. One of Quentin Tarantino's early scripts, it was optioned by two ambitious recent film-school graduates, Hamsher and Don Murphy. The script was optioned when Tarantino was still an unknown; later, a suddenly hot Tarantino decided that he didn't want the film to be made. His substantial efforts to stop Murphy and Hamsher (including bad- mouthing the pair to studios) were trumped, however, when Oliver Stone decided that he wanted to make this his next film. And that's when things really spun out of control, including long, drug-fueled location-scouting trips, a prison riot during shooting, and innumerable back-stabbings. Stone's preferred modus operandi involves elaborate mindgames, playing his crew members off against each other--purportedly to energize their creativity. The results were predictably chaotic and venomous. Rarely has a book by a Hollywood player (albeit a minor one) been so confessional and recklessly revealing, detailing just how mean and twisted, petty and vindictive, the movie industry can be: ``The world of Hollywood . . . belonged to the cantankerous sons of bitches who were willing to risk any humiliation, broach any authority, get on the phone and scream until they got what they wanted.'' Hamsher freely burns bridges left and right, viciously (though apparently justifiably) damning Tarantino, sideswiping Stone, lambasting agents and studio execs. Forget lunch. After this book, she'll be lucky to do a snack in Hollywood. But her recklessness is our gain: This compelling look behind the curtain should help dispel forever any fond illusions about the ``magic'' of movies. Review
Advance Praise for Killer Instinct:

"This lean, mean, scabrously honest account of the making of Natural Born Killers amply proves the truism that moviemaking is a 'controlled accident'. . . . Rarely has a book by a Hollywood player . . . been so confessional and recklessly revealing. . . . This compelling look behind the curtain should help dispel forever any fond illusions about the 'magic' of movies."
--Kirkus Reviews

"Few books capture the roller-coaster ride of trying to get a movie made as enjoyably as this one."
--Roger Avary, cowriter, Pulp Fiction

"Fast, funny and horrifically honest, this is Hollywood from the locusts' point of view, shot through a jeweled and compounded eye. . . . A terrific book."
--Alan Moore, author, The Watchmen and V for Vendetta

"Drugs! Sex! Madness! Movie Stars! Killer Instinct is a screamingly funny, seriously terrifying saga of two naifs who outfox the psychotic dons who run the film business. . . . With this book, Jane Hamsher elevates the Hollywood tell-all to a literary art form."
--Jerry Stahl, author, Permanent Midnight

"Fax and copy machines are working overtime in Hollywood with galleys of Killer Instinct. . . . Gossipy . . . [and] filled with wicked wit. . . . Hamsher's gonzo take on NBK's evolution offers an insider's view of show-biz egos."

If I could give this book a perfect 10, I would
By C.J. Ellisson
I haven't read a traditional thriller novel in years, preferring my newer interest of strong heroines portrayed in urban fantasy novels. I like darker books, not books seeped in romance. Finding a good book is sometimes hard in a genre that mixes the two so much. After a while, those heroines with their supernatural powers and impossible skill sets often become cookie-cutter and formulaic, leaving a reader longing for something more believable, more *real*.

Look no further than the heroine created by Ms. Sharp. You will quickly slip into the character's skin and see parts of yourself within her inner complexity. I felt like I walked the streets of Lancaster with her and felt the pain of her past that shaped her into who she is today.

Charlie Fox is strong and a survivor through and through. She reminds me of Charlaine Harris' Lily Bard, in the author's popular woman sleuth Shakespeare series (one of two excellent mystery series she wrote before the one based on HBO's True Blood). While Fox's adventures are more bloody, more violent, and more heart stopping than Bard's, my comparison is more due to the smooth story telling, excellent pacing, and credible characters, which makes the portrayal of these fictional women very real and very believable.

I raced through the pages eager to see where the writer would take us and how Fox would pull through. Very rarely do I give up an entire day of my life to a book. This one was the exception. I loved it so much I immediately bought a copy for my father and plan to buy the others in the series as well. Ms. Sharp has a fan in me for life and I can hardly wait to read what other adventures she dreams up for Charlie Fox. Simply outstanding!

A very worthwhile read - especially the foreword!
By K. O'Leary
I am glad I purchased this e-book. I wanted to read those extra scenes, and it has been lovely to visit Charlie's story again from the beginning, particularly after reading the 'Fox Five' e-thology.

Zoë recently wrote about her fondness for Dick Francis books growing up, and I can see similar elements in `Killer Instinct'. Clever use of words, twists and turns in the story, and a central core of justice. I like details and back story so it's really satisfying to read about Clare and Jacob, as well as background about where Charlie came from as a person. Overall it reads like an easy conversation, with intriguing and sometimes uncomfortable elements.

My fondness for 'Killer Instinct' is also sparked by Lee Child's foreword; it is my favorite relateable anecdote for books - Lee,your story made me laugh out loud - thanks for the enjoyment! As for the book I devoured it in an afternoon, I couldn't put it down. For a first novel, it's impressive.

The series and the writing has grown from strength to strength, I suppose I enjoyed the later books more because I came across them first - though this filled in story links alluded to in the later books. I find myself liking gory detail much less these days, so for me it's a well-balanced blend of a rollicking good read, without the stuff that keeps me awake nights. Charlie herself is someone I can relate to, in how she attempts to address the effects of pivotal events in her life - seeing how she handles her dilemmas has kept me engrossed. Character development is something that really keeps my interest, as well as the unexpected, and I've certainly been surprised.

Excellent new British tough heroine
By A Customer
If you like US female PIs (VI Warshawski, Kinsey Millhone) then you'll like Charlie Fox.
Charlie is tough. She teaches women's self-defence (which she took up after being raped in the army), rides a motorbike and is very independent.
The book starts with Charlie's friend Clare being attacked during karaoke night at a local nightclub by reigning champion Susie Hollins. Charlie deals with the attack and is offered a job as a bouncer by the clubs owner. Hours later Susie Hollins is found dead - the latest victim of a homicidal rapist that has been terrorising the local community. Charlie suspects a link between the nightclub and the homicidal rapist and she begins to investigate.
The book moves along at a cracking pace and Charlie is a believable tough heroine. The identity of the killer may be obvious in a plot that has been used many times before, but Charlie is interesting enough to carry you through.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-7–Alex Kendrill and his friend Rocky are exploring in the woods when they discover an illegal animal trap. Shortly thereafter, Alex witnesses a pig falling off the back of a truck driven by a reckless driver, and he and his friends and family rescue it. When its owner shows up to claim it, the Kendrills refuse to release it. When Hogman again attempts to reclaim the animal, he kidnaps Alex's cat, Pete. His family then sets out to locate the feline and prove that the man is involved in illegal trapping. Kehret has a unique writing style, and the text includes long stretches of story narrated by Pete. Some of these scenes are deliciously snarky, with the cat looking up words in the dictionary that start with the letters c-a-t and giving a detailed description of coughing up furballs. The technique is also effective when he describes what happens to him during his kidnapping. Animal lovers will get a kick out of this intriguing mystery.–Kristen Oravec, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Strongsville, OH

From Booklist
Punctuated by italicized interjections from a feline coauthor, who inserts himself into the tale as a major character, this uncomplicated animal-rescue adventure opens with the discovery of an illegal game trap and closes with an arrest. In between, young Alex--with friends, family, and, of course, his pet--faces off against Hogman, a scruffy, abusive ne'er-do-well with a gun. Having helped rescue workers save a pig that falls from Hogman's recklessly driven truck, Alex suspects the tough-talking hermit of setting traps, but it's the cat who finds the evidence--and who is nearly shot in the suspenseful climax. Despite major holes in the story's internal logic, young fans of Spy Cat (2002) and Stranger Next Door (2001) will enjoy watching the cat expedite Hogman's apprehension while grousing that his human associates are too dim to realize that he's trying to communicate with them. A gripping story for all animal lovers.
By Diana
Pete, the cat, has helped to write another good story. This time he helps a pig in trouble. Pete understands what his humans are saying but is not pleased that they never seem to listen to him. If you like a well-written story, this one's for you.

Fun and Suspense for a developing Mystery Fan
By Jackie Foster
We had to find a Mystery book for my 4th grader's book report and we discovered Pete! He is the main character of a series of books by Peg Kehret, and he is a cat with attitude! As the story is told, it is punctuated with Pete's personal views and comments which had my daughter laughing and running to us to read her favorite parts aloud! She loved this book and we have bought more in the series! Pete will appeal to girls and boys!

My son loved it!
By D. Turner
I bought my son a Pete the Cat book at a local bookstore. It was such fun that he wanted more. I immediately ordered the others here. We both enjoyed reading the book. He likes me to read him a chapter or two at bedtime each night even though at 8 he is an excellent reader on his own. Pete the detective cat is great fun. I hope there are more of this series in the works.
