Jack and Chandler are a great team!
By Charles R. Rutledge
Kindle Worlds is an interesting idea. Basically Amazon will pay for fan fiction. There are various worlds based on comic books, TV series, and books, and you can write for any of them, publish on Amazon and split the money with Amazon. So say, if you wanted to write a story featuring THE ETERNAL WARRIOR or ARCHER AND ARMSTRONG from Valiant Comics, then have at it.
Not surprisingly, J.A. Konrath, the guru of self publishing, has set up his own Kindle Worlds, one featuring his signature character Jack Daniels, and a new one featuring Codename: Chandler, a female spy/hit person he created with Ann Voss Peterson. However in Konrath's worlds there's a difference. With other Kindle worlds, you lose the rights to the characters you create to Amazon. They become part of the Kindle World. Not so in Konrath's world. If you team one of your characters with Jack Daniels or Chandler, that character still belongs to you.
Which brings us to FIX, a brand new story by Konrath, Ann Voss Peterson, and F.Paul Wilson, which teams Chandler with Repairman Jack, hero of a whole series of novels by Wilson. I downloaded this last night, sat down to read the first couple of chapters and of course, gleefully tore through the entire story.
Chandler works for one of those 'off the books' government organizations that thriller writers are so fond of. She's been sent to New York to find a terrorist who is planning on selling a canister of extremely deadly toxin. Chandler's job? Get the toxin and eliminate the terrorist with extreme prejudice.
Meanwhile, Jack, who works as a freelance urban mercenary, is hired by an aide to New York's Mayor to retrieve a sex tape featuring the Mayor's daughter. Through various circumstances, Jack and Chandler cross paths and in true comic book fashion, try to beat up each other before teaming up to face a common foe.
If you're a fan of F. Paul Wilson's Repairman Jack series, you know that it has now officially ended. No more adventures for Jack after the events of NIGHT WORLD. This story, however, takes us back to the early days of Jack's career, before he met Gia, the Love of his life. Thus Jack is open to romance with Chandler.
Of course a romance between someone who kills when he has to and someone who kills for a living can take some interesting turns. Fans of Jack will see the usual faces and places, but the book is considerably sexier than the average Repairman Jack. According to the book's afterword, that's the fault of Konrath and Peterson. It works though.
This is a fast moving, action packed novella, which barely slows to catch its breath. If you're a fan of the Repairman jack series, this is a must have, and if you're like me, you'll leave the tale wanting to read more about Codename: Chandler as well.

Try it back to back with Rescue and try to ignore what you know about the movie Casablanca
By Ronin
Other reviewers have done a fine job of describing the collaborative process that resulted in the novella Fix as well as the basic plot elements. I'll only comment on two things. First, readers who are fans of the Chandler series will have fun if they read both Fix and the novella Rescue in order to savor the contrasting styles and storytelling when authors share certain common elements (strong male and female protagonists, sex, action, doublecrosses, combat) but where the main characters are Chandler and Repairman Jack (who tend to generally fall on the side of the angels) versus the 'darker' duo of Hammett and Tequila. Second, though I'll admit that my skim of the other reviews was fairly perfunctory, am I the only person who wants to call out the authors on a pretty appalling editorial error at the end of Fix? I doubt that it warrants a 'spoiler alert' but - especially given that so much of Fix involves Jack bantering with Chandler about classic movies, and given the text at the end of the novella where the authors describe their collaborative work - I'm pretty stunned that the following managed to sneak past. 'I stopped at Water Tower Place and came across a movie memorabilia store in the mall. In the window was a poster. Bogart. Bacall, Cheek to cheek. Casablanca." (Uhh... no.)

Jack's back in a brand new killer novella!
By James Tepper
As a long-time FP Wilson fan (as in I think I have read every novel he's ever written) who has also read some Konrath, I was curious when I stumbled across the description of this new (May 4, 2015) novella starring Repairman Jack and some woman named Chandler. No doubt about it, it was RJ that has me jumping for joy, since FPW has been adamant for years that there would be no more new RJ tales after the events of NIGHTWORLD, a 2012 rewrite of the original 1992 final novel of the Adversary Cycle that was heavily revised to incorporate all of the RJ novels. How could there be? The world was essentially destroyed, and only saved at the last second by the immortal hero of THE KEEP with a little help from Jack, so there was no more need for an off-the-grid fixer like Jack.
Under tremendous pressure from fans and publishers, FPW relented and agreed to 3 more novels set as prequels to all of the events in the main RJ sequence, when Jack was in his early 20s and newly arrived in NYC. FPW was firm after the last of the prequels (FEAR CITY) that he was done with Jack, and though I was sad, I understood. He has been saying literally for years that he didn't want to run him into the ground and enough was enough. But Jack and the RJ novels were arguably the most popular, commercially successful and well received of all FPW's novels. And I wondered, what happened to Jack between his early 20's and mid-30's his age at the beginning of THE TOMB, the first novel in the RJ series?
In this outstanding collaboration between FPW, JA Konrath and Ann Peterson, Jack is in his late 20s or early 30's and a well established fixer. During one of his annual Parkathons in which he Robin Hoods muggers and thieves in Central Park to contribute to the Little League, he comes to the aid (he thinks) of a young woman (Chandler) and the two of them (the mugger is long gone) have a misunderstanding and the rest is history. Chandler is Jack's twin, only she works deep undercover for an unnamed governmental agency as a spy-assassin. It ends a draw with a truce and both go their separate ways, she with something of Jacks's and he with something of hers. The meet for a second time in what will be a familiar location for RJ fans, call a permanent truce, and head to you-know-where for a drink, where each fills the other in on their respective current jobs. There are knives, guns, halberds and other ancient weapons used by Chandler and Jack to commit all sorts of mayhem in pursuit of their respective baddies. It is vintage Jack sans all the cosmic stuff (but be on the lookout for a cameo by one of the major players in the coming battle) and it is great.
There is a long afterword by Wilson, Peterson and Konrath in which they reveal the mechanics of how this fast-moving, seamlessly written and plotted novella came to be. I've not read of the Chandler stuff yet but I intend to. Suffice it to say that this was a fantastic fix for RJ-aholics like me and leaves open the hope that there may yet still be more Jack to come.
Highly recommended.
