Semantic mapping, a categorical structuring of information in graphic form, has been used successfully in a variety of classroom applications. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to this semantic based instructional strategy and presents the theoretical rationale for the effectiveness of the semantic mapping procedure as well as a review of studies. Also included are ten classroom applications of the semantic mapping procedure in a variety of content areas.

Improving reading comprehension is a top priority as well as an area of concern for the majority of teachers today. In recent years, however, research on cognition, language acquisition, and information processing has contributed to a better understanding of the comprehension process. Much has been learned about how readers comprehend and how teachers can help improve comprehension. in light of this research, comprehension can be viewed as an active process in which readers interpret what they read in accordance with what is already known about the topic, thus building bridges between the new and the known (Pearson & Johnson, 1978).

Viewing the reading process as a mental dialogue between the writer and the reader is an outgrowth of the impact of schema theory on the research in reading comprehension. Schema theory attempts to explain how information from the text becomes integrated with the reader's prior knowledge, thus influencing the comprehension process. According to schema theorists, that which is experienced and learned is stored in the brain in networks or categories called schemata. These schemata are incomplete and are constantly being further developed. As new information is received, the schemata are restructured and fine tuned (Pearson & Spiro, 1982). For example, as a person reads about, sees pictures of, or visits a zoo, each experience adds to the schema for zoo. Each piece of new information expands and refines the existing schema.

The book might look insignificant, but it contains a powerhouse of graphic organizers that can be used throughout the curriculum. The book contains vivid examples of semantic mapping strategies for classroom application.

The organization of the book makes it easy to use. The authors provide additional resources and references to aide in implementing the lessons.

Each variation of the mapping strategy has a complete lesson plan, objectives, goals, and activities.

It also has a step-by-step process for introducing the activities and a daily guide for engage students in the learning process.

Guide & Practice, with nice online component- makes it easy to concentrate on individual sections of the 4 part GED

This actually comes with an online component, as well as the book, which includes two practice tests with rationales, Though it is thick, once you start reading through it, you realize it's not nearly as intimidating as it looks. A good portion of it is the test, with lots of empty space, room for graphics, and rationales that you may or may not even need to read.

There's a website online, and don't worry about a lack of a code- on registration it will have you look up a page in the book and give a word that's easy to find. Then there's a shopping cart, but the balance will be 0.00 so there's no more cost.

The book also helps with instructions on how to register and schedule your test. Since this book came out, in a lot of states passing scores have dropped from 150 per section to 145- if this includes your state, it will let you know that when you go to this GED testing site that the book lists. Georgia happens to be one of those states. Other than that, and that did just change in the last couple of weeks- everything about the book seems very current and updated.
Just don't let the size of the book intimidate you. My son decided to break the test down into 4 sections since it costs the same no matter what, and that's what the people at the test center recommended to him. The book makes it easy to concentrate on one section of the test at a time if that is what you wish to do too.

I trust Kaplan. I got my nursing license using Kaplan's test prep, and I was so prepared that I blew through the test so fast I thought surely I'd missed a large segment of it somehow. All my instructors always said if you can pass the Kaplan practice tests, you'll have no trouble on the real thing.

Way more helpful than I thought it would be. I probably learned more taking the pretest in this book, than I did sitting in class for five years. If you want to get your GED out of the way quick, this book is the way to go!

#2 GED test prep on my scale!

Of all the different study guides that I've received or bought (I purchased the 2015 version of this and received the 2016 Premier version to review as well), this on ranks in at number 2 for me, right after the 2016 Premier version.

A noticeable difference between Kaplan's guides and others (especially the ones for "idiots" or from a certain Mc-Book company), Kaplan's are not riddled with errors!

The large book LOOKS daunting, but because of how it is arranged and presented, along with it's ability to point out key importances, it is very easy and straight forward to follow. Comprehension and knowledge retention seems to be much higher because of this.

Now why only three stars, it's not perfect nor does it hold up as well as the Premier version. Because of this, it gets a solid three stars. I would still recommend this book, but for only a few dollars more I would HIGHLY recommend Kaplan's GED Test Premier 2016. It has better online access/help/strategies and just seems more complete for helping you through the entire process and tests.

About the Author
Peter Seibel is a serious developer of long standing. In the early days of the Web, he hacked Perl for Mother Jones and Organic Online. He participated in the Java revolution as an early employee at WebLogic which, after its acquisition by BEA, became the cornerstone of the latter's rapid growth in the J2EE sphere. He has also taught Java programming at UC Berkeley Extension. He is the author of Practical Common LISP from Apress.

A wonderful (and fun) guide to Common Lisp

I've been recommending this text to people who want to start learning Common Lisp since it was first available in draft form on the author's web site. Now that it's out in print I can enthusiastically recommend that anybody who is interested in learning Common Lisp - or even curious about how the language can improve your productivity - purchase it.

Peter has a very enjoyable and easy-to-understand writing style, and he starts early with practical examples that show how Common Lisp can be used to solved problems. Chapter 3, "A Simple Database", is a great explanation of how programs are grown from pieces in Common Lisp to solve large problems. It's presented early and draws people in to the problem solving techniques used when programming in Lisp.

Peter doesn't skimp on details, though: detailed chapters on FORMAT (for formatted output), LOOP (for general iteration / value collection), and CLOS (the Common Lisp Object System) provide a wonderful tutorial to these powerful but complex features.

The book ends with a long string of practical examples that synthesize multiple concepts into programs that are useful and show exactly why programming in Lisp is so cool. The last practical example, which builds a HTML generation library in Lisp, gives the reader a taste of why writing a Domain-Specific Language is so easy in Lisp and why it can integrate so well with the rest of the language.

Peter is very enthusiastic about Common Lisp and it shows in his writing. Unlike other authors (Paul Graham comes to mind) he gives every major feature of the language its due and shows how and where it should be used.

Practical Common Lisp may be one of the most fun books on programming you'll read all year. Even if you're just curious, check it out. It may change the way you program.

Solid introduction

Practical Common Lisp is a solid introductory text to Common Lisp for people with previous programming experience, and is sufficiently no-nonsense that even relatively experienced lisp programmers will benefit from it.

Having been exposed to people with no lisp experience who have started learning it from this book, most seem to manage well. Common problems stem from jumping too far ahead: unlike many books who claim to do so, PCL actually has a very nice didactic approach to most things, and benefits from being read in order.

I have very few grivances with the book:

1. I believe that package and symbol semantics could benefit from a thorough treatment earlier in the book -- say around chapter 6, as opposed to being left for chapter 22.

2. While Seibel's style is refreshingly idiomatic[1], he consistently uses Javaesque dotted.package.names, which while not by any means unique to him I still find irritating. Most of the package names in the book are prefixed with com.gigamonkeys, whereas the more traditional approach would be to leave the prefix out totally, or make it com-gigamonkeys.

3. Optimizing lisp code is admittedly a tough topic to deal with, especially when aspiring to give portable advice. The treament given is nonetheless too cursory for my liking. Norvig's advice in "Paradigms of Artificial Intelligence Programming" is far superior, but could still have been improved upon.

These nits aside, I must say that this is definitely a book I wish I'd had when I was learning CL. Recommended to anyone interested in learning Common Lisp.

[1] Some well-known authors of Common Lisp textbooks *cough* Graham *cough* have unfotunately quirky personal styles of writing code that do not mesh that well with what many consider idiomatic lisp. In comparison to this Mr. Seibel's style is clear and provides a good model to emulate.

Extremely well written -- now, watch out for the index!

Peter Seibel's writing style is a joy to read, and (unlike other commenters) I find his footnotes quite useful. Concepts are introduced in a natural and general intuitive ordering, and in general this is a great book for the first-time learner of Lisp.

Now -- WATCH OUT FOR THE INDEX! My first indication that the index of this book was not up to par was an especially useful footnote on page 58 mentioning READ-FROM-STRING, which I couldn't find later when I needed to use READ-FROM-STRING in the small Lisp program I'm writing. A little experimentation convinced me that nothing in the footnotes is listed in the index, and I started reading with a pencil in my hand.

Unfortunately, the index fails in more fundamental ways as well. It would have you believe that the "do" keyword is introduced on page 278, when in fact an entire subsection is devoted to "do" in pages 85-87. If you look up "comment" you'll find no mention of page 49, where comment conventions for block comments, line comments and so forth are described in concise and useful detail. The long list of special characters that stars the alphabet is inexplicably lacking some of the most common operators and directives, such as #', ,@ , ,@ and #. In fact, the only thing the index seems consistently to get right are words that appear in all capital letters in the body of the text.

It slows my reading considerably to constantly be adding pencilled entries to the index, but since it will probably save hours of irritated searching for information in the future, I'm persisting. Let's all hope this glaring flaw is corrected soon in a second edition. In the meantime, there's always the option of searching the full text, which is online on the gigamonkeys site, every time you would normally flip to the index.

A bit different from her first two books, and even better.

When Christi told me she was writing a book about a woman in an abusive relationship, I couldn’t imagine any way she would be able to do that. Her stories are about people with strong moral character in pursuit of their dreams; who overcome difficulty with courage and find romance somewhere along the way.
I know a thing or two about abusive people and their targets, having made it the focus of my studies at seminary. They are not romantic, and not entertaining to read about. Or so I thought.
Her story took me on a roller coaster ride from calm anticipation through fear, sadness, tension, anxiety, anger and – total surprise – romance and laughter. Amazing.
All the hallmarks of Christi’s work are in this book – her standards for clean writing and her belief in a code of honor that demands integrity from her main characters, along with the ability to create scenes that feel more real than imagined.
Christi – you nailed it. This is your best work yet

Another fantastic read by Christi Corbett!!

As with all of Christi's books you can tell the amount of time, research and hard work that goes into making her stories as accurate as possible. A Mountain Man's Redemption is about Phillip, a fur trapper in Montana set in the 1880's. As Phillip is on his way to make the last trade of the season, he comes across a young mother and her baby. Will he risk everything that he's worked so hard for in order to help them, or will he leave them to find their own way?

The story moves at a good pace and keeps the reader interested and also has a little suspense. Although it's not a book with Romantic love, the love really pours off the pages. This is a great heart warming story and I loved it!!

This novella deals with the tough subject of abuse. I hope that if someone reads this and find that it speaks to them, that they get help. No one deserves to be made to feel less than wonderful.

A fur-trapper who lives on his own in the Montana wilderness during the winter of 1886 is best served when he has only himself to worry about for survival, but when Philip Grant comes across an unexpected duo in need of help, he must decide whether to put his own life on the line to save them, or walk away.

Philip has had a good haul for a fur-trapper this season, but he soon finds himself with only ten days left to get his furs to the nearest fort, more than eighty miles away. It will be a difficult journey, which must be made quickly. But before long, he finds himself challenged with more than just time and distance. The reader will learn that Philip has his own demons in life to battle, but none more urgent that Hannah whom he discovers battered and beaten and clutching a baby in the middle of a harsh winter. Slowly and out of necessity, Hannah begins to explain the circumstances that have driven her, literally, out into the snow without proper gear for herself or her baby. With Philip’s continued prompting, the young mother confides in the fur-trapper, telling a heartbreaking story of abuse by her husband.

Wife abuse is not your average storyline in a historic novel, but maybe we should see it more often. The story is built upon a strong faith, and is historically accurate. It shows us that what we believe to be a modern problem is not at all. The reader gets a vastly different perspective in this well-written story.

This is a quick read, which is what brings me to my only criticism of the story. In the story’s beginning, Philip discovers a quilt in the snow-covered woods, and although we already know he is behind schedule and has an urgent need to get to Fort Matiley before it closes, which involves crossing “the most rugged mountain peaks in Montana,” he moves far too slowly. He spends too much time deciding whether to find out what’s inside the mysterious quilt. There were a few other points in the story where I felt things needed to move more quickly, given the urgency, too. With that said, this story was nearly flawless in its delivery.

If you’re looking for historical fiction, or a story with a 1880s flare, and the theme of a battered woman won’t deter you, then this is a story worth your time.

Not your parents' money management book

First, here's what this book is not: It's not your parents' money management and investing book, although as a parent I wish I had done in my twenties what Ramit Sethi tells the twenty-somethings they should be doing right now.

Ramit starts with the premise that most people are so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of financial information available that they just shut down and do nothing. So Ramit tells you exactly what to do with your money and why. Want to know whether it's smarter to pay extra on your student loans or put that money into your 401(k) instead? Ramit will tell you. Want to know some specific financial companies that offer the low-cost index funds you should invest in through your Roth IRA? Ramit will tell you. Do you not even know what the heck an index fund is? Ramit will tell you!

Ramit also tells the truth about brown bagging your lunch and curbing your latte habit; and the truth is that these actions on their own are virtually pointless. Instead, you should go after the big wins, like getting the lowest interest rate and the best price on your next car because you have impeccable credit and negotiated "like an Indian" (negotiation scripts included).

Ramit maps out exactly how to get from where you are now to where you want to be financially, including how to create a personal money management system that practically manages itself. Ramit's system starts with a no-fee checking account and an online high-interest savings account. (He even tells you which online bank he uses.) He then walks you through setting up automatic bill payments and regularly scheduled transfers to your investment accounts. Throughout, he includes easy-to-understand charts, as well as short pieces by other personal finance bloggers.

I Will Teach You To Save Money should be the title of this book and Ramit's Blog

I Will Teach You To Save Money, though a far less titillating title would be the more appropriate name for this book. 20 and 30 somethings are the intended audience for this book. And for them the book is delightfully irreverent and saucy in its language. You will not get rich by using the concepts in this book however you will gain basic financial literacy, which is the first step on the path to creating wealth. There are no new financial revelations in this book. If you already have a personal finance library you can pass on this book. If you don't already have one and are looking for a place to start, this book is a great way to go. I Will Teach You To Be Rich is not for people who have created a measure of wealth and are looking to increase it. For that you will have to look elsewhere.

This is definitely the best personal finance book I've read so far. It's a logical, step-by-step, practical handbook for financial success, specially written for people in their 20's. Sethi gives advice on “automatically enabling yourself to save, invest, and spend - enjoying it, not feeling guilty...because you’re spending only what you have.” His main point: automate your finances so you effortlessly save and invest, leaving you money to spend on things you love without feeling guilty. Automatic saving and investing helps overcome psychological barriers and laziness.

In addition to his emphasis on automation, I agreed with Sethi’s recommendation for long-term, passive, buy-and-hold investing instead of speculative, market-timing investing. I also liked Sethi’s 85 Percent Solution, which states that it's better to act and get it 85% right than to do 0%; sometimes good enough is good enough, and it’s always better than doing nothing.

Another good message is "spend extravagantly on the things you love, and cut costs mercilessly on the things you don't." That's valuable because everyone defines being "rich" differently, and it's not all about money. Money is just the tool we use to acquire the material possessions and experiences we want. That's the difference between being cheap and being frugal; being cheap is trying to cut spending on everything, and being frugal is cutting costs on the things you don't care about so that you can splurge on the things you do.

I liked the concept of making a Conscious Spending Plan instead of a budget. Almost no one actually makes a budget, and even fewer follow it. Instead, consciously decide how you'll spend your money. I especially like this idea of guilt-free spending, because too often the recommendation is to limit all spending. But people in their 20s want to live it up, not sit at home and pinch every penny! The Conscious Spending Plan lets you spend a certain percentage of your money on whatever you want, without feeling guilty, since you’re paying yourself and your bills first.

The book is written in the form of a 6-week action plan. Each chapter describes the tasks and reasoning behind them, and ends with a checklist of steps to take. Here are the weeks:

Week 1: Credit Cards. Check your credit, pick a good credit card, set up automatic payments, pay off debt.
Week 2: Bank Accounts. Open or assess your checking account, open and fund a high-interest savings account.
Week 3: Investing Accounts. Open a 401(k), make a plan to pay off debt, open a Roth IRA and set up automatic payment.
Week 4: Conscious Spending. Create a Conscious Spending Plan, track spending, and cut in the right places.
Week 5: Automatic Money Flows. List and link accounts, then set up an Automatic Money Flow to automatically fund the 4 categories of your Conscious Spending Plan.
Week 6: Investing Choices. Figure out your investing style, research investments, and buy funds.

The book gives a fairly in-depth explanation of the concepts and fundamentals of personal finance, but also contains plenty of examples of actual bank accounts and funds. There are many references to the 2008 recession and other events, so those parts of the book didn't age well.

Buying a house
Houses are a poor investment compared to stocks; they’ve historically returned 0% after inflation. Before buying a house, determine the total monthly payment including mortgage, taxes, insurance, and maintenance. It should be less than 30% of your gross monthly income.
The total house price should be less than 3 times your annual gross income.
Buy a house only if you can live in it for 10 years. Make a 20% down payment and get a 30 year fixed rate mortgage.

To be fair, I probably should have listened to this one, but I did many of the other things Sethi points out.

Use savings for goals less than 5 years away.
Set your accounts for automatic deferrals, transfers, and payments to automatically direct money into retirement accounts, savings, bills, and a spending allowance.
Negotiate a higher total compensation (salary plus benefits) by researching compensation for comparable jobs and proving the value you bring to the company.

Engrossing, disturbing, and very readable

Patrick Coffey’s well-researched and well-written book provides an enlightening and unnerving look at the technology and the politics of American weaponry over the last century (from submarines and poison gas in World War I to today’s drones). Inventors, bureaucrats, scientists, politicians, and military brass are seen maneuvering here in pursuit of often conflicting goals and ideals as they seek to develop and deploy (or prevent the deployment of) various fearsome weapons systems. Coffey gives an unflinching account of the horrific efficacy of those weapons (or their potential, in the case of those that were developed but, like poison gas, not used) and a behind-the-scenes look at the refinements and the occasional literal and figurative misfires in their development. Those missteps occasionally introduce a wry undertone, such as when Coffey describes the Army’s disastrous tests in 1943 of a plan to attach incendiary bombs to bats and release them over Japanese cities. Readers who know about America’s armaments and their use only from government press releases or other sanitized accounts will find particularly sobering, among other revelations, just how much more destructive American fire bombings were on Japanese cities than the atomic bombs dropped there and the ever-expanding definition of strategic targets that translates into lost civilian lives. Despite these grim details, though, American Arsenal is eminently readable and engrossing.

Interesting and well-written.

This book has a wealth of fascinating information for anyone (like me) who is interested in the subject matter, and it presents that information in a well-written narrative spiced with wry observations on the often perverse actions of the soldiers, scientists and politicians who have guided (and sometimes misguided) our nation's military decisions. Anyone with an interest in the military history of the 20th century will enjoy this book.

An Excellent Review of 20th Century Weapons Systems

For WWI and WWII history fans, this book adds an essential element to these complicated conflicts. The chapters on the development of the Norden bombsight and Napalm are especially detailed and complete. The author excels, however, in his description of the people behind these weapons systems. Curtis LeMay is shown to be less the crazy general, as depicted in the popular press of the 1960's and 1970's and more of a warrior dedicated to winning any conflict. Glenn Seaborg and Edward Teller are revealed to be intelligent men but far too interested in celebrity and recognition. Patrick Coffey has written a fine addition to any military history collection.

Heartwrenching, honest tale about a man who wanted desperately to get answers to his questions about his religion

Out of all the books I've read from Mormons and Ex-Mormons, Lee Baker, "Mormonism; A Life Under False Pretenses" is the best at describing the sense of moral outrage many Ex-Mormons feel when they learn about the doctrines of blood atonement and polygamy/polyandry in Mormonism, and the despair when they feel the sense of utter abandonment as no official representative of the LDS Church will answer why these doctrines existed and were never refuted or disowned by the LDS church. Lee Baker's historical facts are well researched and not exaggerating the facts. His personal story is all too familiar to anyone who has dared to ask LDS leaders hard questions about the dark side of their history, like Joseph Smith marrying other men's wives and lying about it in public, and getting "No comment" for a reply or that asking the question represents a lack of spirituality. Lyndon Lamborn's "Standing for Something" is similar in that both Lamborn and Baker merely started asking too many questions of too many people in the church, and were excommunicated so they wouldn't influence other members with a spirit of asking their leaders questions. The LDS church leadership treats its members like they are employees in a business, where if you ask your "bosses"/priesthood leaders too many hard questions, they will take it as insubordination and fire you/excommunicate you. The LDS church, however, will not just "fire" its members, it will say that due to their excommunication they can't be with their family in eternity forever, or in the presence of God forever, so there is a lot more emotional weight to being kicked out of the church than just being fired from a job.

The only qualification I would make is that it might help Lee Baker to put the events of his Mormon experience and excommunication in context if he read "Combatting Cult Mind Control" by Steven Hassan (his website is freedomofmind.com). Controlling, manipulative organizations including religious, business, and political cults are unfortunately all too common in the world, and they tend to use similar hypocritical and deceptive tactics to keep their members under their control and contributing with time and money. Hassan describes several examples of such organizations and how to combat their deceptive, subtle tactics. There are even much worse religious cults than the LDS church. The LDS church I would describe as a "soft cult" today, but a "hard cult" under the harsh reign of Brigham Young in the late 1800s.

how people can be turned into "split personalities" through being in a mind controlling cult organization, and this causes them to do hurtful things their real or genuine self would never otherwise do. This may explain how Lee Baker's priesthood leaders could do such wrong and hurtful things, which he did not seem to expect of them based on prior experience, because they were probably acting from the "cult" half of their personality.

I loved this book!!!

It was truthful and an amazing story of how someone came out of Mormonism with the knowledge of the love of God and His love for us that helped him make his way out of this church that tells you lies about God. He has a great love for his fellow Mormons and I hope his life is spent trying to get more people out and into the salvation of Jesus alone.
