Well, I've been here before...

It was when I finished Time Trap. And frankly the frustrated sentiment is identical. I want Time Lock now! I'm not typically a fan of any sci-fi, most often because I'm short on imagination and unable to picture complicated characters that are rendered of the authors imagination. These books, however, somehow reached out and grabbed me and I was hooked from the first. They pace well and keep you reading. And I would definitely say that Micah Caida has the art of the cliffhanger whittled down to an actual science.

Now I'm eager to see how it finishes. Will Rayen get her man and memory back? Will Gabby find her place in either world? Will Tony finally be able to realize his dream of taking care of his brother? I want to know now! Take your Time, ladies. We all need this final installment to be the culmination of everything. Personally, I hope Rayen kicks SEOH's arse back to 1942. That's my vote. Happy reading! And to Micah Caida, happy writing!

I don't care if your young or old this second book is great. These authors won't let you down. I read it in two days because I couldn't put it down. They get you to remember what it was like to be young, and make you realize you don't have to older to be heroic. The only sad thing is now I have to wait for the next one.

Nonstop action and emotional conflicts

Though the main characters are all teenagers in The Red Moon trilogy, my adult mind easily became riveted in the many tricky dilemmas this spirited trio faced. From dire predicaments to challenging emotional issues, these three are still making difficult decisions in the second book and often there is not a satisfying choice. The writing duo known as Micah Caida has truly created a most unusual storyline plus unique characters, and outcomes are never assured until ever single second plays out. TIME RETURN is notable science fiction with lots of unexpected twists.

After waking up with no memory of her past, Rayen was taken to a school where many students study varied subjects and even live. Most of those at the school think of her as rather strange, but she had managed to make friends with two other teenagers. By chance, the three somehow traveled through time to a place known as the Red Moon sphere, a world in their future. Even though they managed to make it back to the present, Rayen has vowed to return and help the MystiKs, a group made up of young children and teenagers under the age of eighteen. They are relentlessly persecuted by another group, one which would like for every MystiK to be annihilated.

Rayen hopes the special powers she possesses will help once again when she revisits to the Red Moon sphere. She knows the place contains countless mysterious dangers, but she does not plan on letting the leader of the group down. Callan came to mean much to her in a short time, and there is no way Rayen will let him fight an enemy without her assistance. However, upon arriving back on the sphere, she discovers much destruction took place while she was gone and Callan’s actions are very confusing. While some believe her presence brings even more threats to the MystiKs, there is no way Rayen will leave the vulnerable group unless forced.

There are so many variables affecting the life of Rayen, regardless of what time period she is living in. With so much of her memory missing, she often does not know what path to follow and can only hope any responses are right. Although she is only a teenager, many of the decisions she has to make are extremely difficult yet they must be made. With so many lives affected by whatever she decides, I felt her unease over what to do on so many occasions. The ordeals that just keep coming her way could be disastrous if Rayen chooses incorrectly, and her anxiety is clearly obvious from her inner thoughts to her actions.

The relationship Rayen has with her two friends from school is just like a normal teenager at times. Disagreements occur and minds must be changed, yet their friendship endures throughout it all. The connection between Rayen and Callan is also comparable to two dating teens sometimes. Even though most young people would not have to make such drastic choices, they do have to think about matters that involve other individuals along with their own desires. The peril in the story is very real, and I often held my breath until a scene concluded. With its dramatic ending, the third book in the series looks to be even more intense. Micah Caida has crafted a notable science fiction series with believable characters and a rewarding plot. TIME RETURN has one risk-taking adventure after another and is continuously entertaining.

She attended Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia, where she studied for a Bachelor of Science (Chem), and also picked up a Diploma in Project Management while working for the South Australian Department of Justice. In her spare time, she likes to lay on the couch and watch TV, garden, draw, read, and tell ALL her family what wonderful human beings they are. She keeps threatening to go out and get a real job (Cheesecake Test Taster sounds good) and intends to retire somewhere warm and dry - like the middle of the Simpson Desert. Exciting But Keeps You Wanting More.

H M Clarke made this very easy to read. Still needs editing not much but some. It was good while you're in the zone, it keeps you reading to the very end of the season, but leaves you with a cliff hanger, excited yes, happy to get to the end no still left me wanting more. Which asks the question how many books are in this series?

Reminded me a little of The Dragon Riders of Pern. Still, Clarke tells her own story and builds her own world Easy to read and hard to put down. I don't feel that Clarke needs to end with a cliff hanger to get her readers to want more. Hopefully she won't keep us waiting too long.

I really like this book, use it frequently as a reference in my reports. It has most everything you need, as a CAE engineer / analyst, could use a little more, but is overall very good.

Not worth reading.

The book is too short and is full of false details. It's also riddled with grammar and punctuation errors. I could have written a better book about Sid & Nancy with more accurate information. Sid did not kill Nancy. The film Who Killed Nancy? has the most accurate information I've ever heard/seen about the death of Nancy.

Should have been much longer...

I only wish this was an actual in depth book,
It would have gladly paid more for an actual account of the days and weeks leading up to Sid and Nancy's star crossed ending.
An actual print version would have been really nice too.
But this all said, it does give the facts (and rumors ) and told me what I wanted to know

Ummm--how did this get published?

I realize that Bengt-Erik Larsson is not a native English speaker. But I would assume that someone who worked on bringing this article from Mr. Larsson 's notebook to my Kindle DOES write English fluently--like, say, the proofreader. And s/he could have paid some attention to the grammar and an editor (or my 7th grader) could have caught the majority of the grammar mistakes, missed words, etc. that make this such a poor read. The story Larsson tells doesn't add much to the story as most of us already know it. And the whole thing is really, really short. I would have been p****d if I had to buy it. (Plug for K Unltd. here. ) Don't waste your time unless you're a die-hard punk (ex-pjnk, post-punk, etc. ). Larsson adds nothing to the story and does it ungrammatically, too. And he does very little to address what happened in room 100 at [sic] Chelsea Hotel. Leave this book on the shelf--it adds nothing to the story.
I gave it 2 stars ONLY because of the supposed subject. I'm a diehard, lived thru it and survived post-punk from a couple of years after but still taken with the mythos of my youthful peers albeit able to leave some of the insanity (& drugs) behind. Too bad so many of us didn't make it, such as Sid and Nancy.

I love Anne Frank!

I'm glad someone decided to provide an uncensored version of Anne Frank's diary in English. This book contains English translations of three versions of Anne Frank's diaries, printed in such a way as to make it easier to compare them than if they had been printed back to back or in separate volumes. One version is Anne's fictionalized version. One is the, censored version as it was introduced to the Puritanical United States. The unabridged version is excellent, but not for prudes. Anne Frank was apparently bisexual, as well as a young woman of great intellect, insight and literary talent! I was amazed at how well I was able to relate to her, even though she was of another gender, born into a different race, raised on a different continent (Europe), about a quarter of a century before me! Thanks to this book, I fell in love with her!

Anne's message enhanced

"The Diary of Anne Frank: The Critical Edition" is a wonderful chronicle on the life and writings of that perky Dutch teenager. Now in my late thirties, I first read her diary at thirteen. I was just a frisky Australian schoolboy trying to learn more about the mysterious world of girls. That first read, though, put me in tears. The diary enchanted me and I wanted to know more about Anne, her family, and those fatal frosted footsteps beyond the Secret Annex.
In time, I would learn more, much more. As the "The Critical Edition" shows there is in fact not one diary but several as Anne rethought and revised her own work. "The Critical Edition" places the various revisions side by side so readers can gain an insight into how Anne constructed her work. There is genius in Anne's work but it didn't always come in the first draft. As inspiration to us mortals, she too, had to work at it.
"The Critical Edition" has an especially fascinating account of the publishing history of the diary. Anne's father was the key to publication and it would be some time before he could come to terms with Anne's incredibly honest account of her developing sexuality and those raw comments on her mother, Edith. Publication also came at a time when people's minds were barely coping with understanding World War II and its legacy. For the first time, "The Critical Edition" highlights the difficulties with translating Anne's diary into German and how, for some, it had come too soon and too fast after the great conflict. Yet, for others, the diary was too good to be the work of - in Anne's words - an "incurable chatterbox". Again, this scholarly (and lengthy) work reveals the outcome of analysis that proves the diary's authenticity.
For the reader there is the danger that the light shed on Anne's life and work by this book will lower her from the enormous pedestal she has arisen. In fact, Anne's spirit emerges even stronger. "The Diary of Anne Frank: the Critical Edition" enhances Anne's irrevocable message that freedom and good can reign over a corrupt and evil world.

A must for anyone interested in Anne Frank

This edition of the famous diary of Anne Frank is unlike any other. Subtitled "The Critical Edition" it includes not only the published version in the translation by Mrs. B. M. Mooyaart-Doubleday, but also everything that was withheld -- at the request of Anne's father -- from the original published version.
While in hiding, Anne heard on a radio broadcast that after the war the Dutch government wanted to collect memoirs and diaries of citizens' wartime experiences. Anne decided to start a revision of her diary, clarifying certain passages and adding in more detail, while deleting items that she deemed unimportant or too personal (Anne wrote very candidly about her own sexuality). The critical edition of her diary includes Anne's first diary, her revisions, and the final, published version.
In addition, this volume contains exhaustively researched sections on the arrest and betrayal of the members of the "Secret Annex," the publishing history of the diary, an account of the creation of the play version, a chronicle of the attacks made on the diary's authenticity, and an incredibly meticulous handwriting analysis comparing letters known to have been written by Anne with excerpts from the diary itself.
I first read "The Diary of Anne Frank" when I was thirteen years old. I reread it about every three or four years and it speaks to me on a new level every time. It has become my all-time favorite book. With this beautiful edition, I am once again disovering this amazing document and this remarkable child.

Appreciate it for what it is.

This translation is the clearest that has yet been published. The writing is far easier to understand than the translation published by Continuum. The edition also provides helpful context for many of Adorno's more obscure references.

If you're new to Adorno's ideas, here are some very general thoughts. Keep in mind that Adorno writes in a highly technical, allusive language; fully understanding a book like this will require years of training in both 20th-century Continental philosophy and music theory, which probably only a handful of individuals really possess or have ever really possessed. (I'm not one of them, so maybe you should take this review with a grain of salt.) Because of the extremism of his musical views, Adorno is mostly out of fashion now in American academia, but any writer as brilliant and sensitive as this at least warrants some acquaintance.

For me, the appeal of this book is that Adorno focuses on the connection between music and culture, and about whether any given cultural pattern is humanizing or de-humanizing. This is almost unique among 20th-century writers on contemporary music. No one else approaches these subjects with the same sustained intensity.

The book is part of Adorno's long-term attempt to understand fascism in a very general sense, especially how fascism permeates Western psychology and culture. If you've read any academic critical theory, you'll be familiar with this theme, which is often handled in a formulaic and unconvincing way. Adorno is more interesting and more sincere than most of this literature -- possibly because, as a student and young professor, Adorno observed the slow approach of WWII, as the mass media, democratically-elected politicians, and cultural leaders clamored for war and fascism. Even highly respected intellectuals at the time such as Max Weber and Martin Heidegger promoted crass nationalism, racism, and war-mongering.

The gist of the basic argument of the book is something like this (keep in mind that I am attempting to put his ideas into plain language and hence heavily re-interpreting and simplifying them): Most war-mongering propaganda emphasizes group unity, optimism, and cheerful dedication to country. Popular culture emphasizes similar qualities. The music of the Second Viennese School is just the opposite; disjointed and bleak, the mature work of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern constitutes an antidote to the falseness in mass culture. Try to imagine a rally of blood-thirsty warmongers coming together to sing a bleak, atonal national anthem -- it's not easy. Musical works that are clear and witty (like Stravinsky), or pleasant or enjoyable (like most popular music) are deceptive, de-humanizing, and even collusive with fascism. Because Western civilization is so dehumanizing, the only honest music that can be written will be likewise dark, disjointed, foreboding, and grotesque.

Adorno's thought is more complicated than this. Schoenberg and Stravinsky receive both praise and criticism for different aspects of their work. Even if you disagree with Adorno's claims, and even if they seem willful, they are never formulaic.

Nevertheless, his criticisms of popular music and various composers (e.g. Hindemith) are notoriously over the top. Do a quick search on Youtube for Adorno interviews about popular music, and you'll see what I mean. If a song has a pleasant, coherent melody, Adorno equates it with the basest, cruelest instincts in man. Innocent songs receive the kind of revulsion and condemnation you might expect would be reserved for a work like Hitler's "Mein Kampf." He even extends similar judgments to Vietnam-era protest songs, of all things.

It's hard to take judgments like this completely seriously. As a result, many writers have adopted strains of Adorno's thought without really agreeing with many of his conclusions. Adorno's assertions/arguments about how this or that is dehumanizing -- popular music, Stravinsky, Hindemith, mass-manufactured items -- probably won't convince many modern readers. You are either on the same page with the author or you aren't.

My view is that, after a while, it feels less like Adorno is really asking questions about the humanity in this music and more like they are reflections of someone with a very abstract, rarefied notion of aesthetic purity. It's sincere, but only up to a point.

Anecdotally, at least, Viennese atonal music had an uneven record as an antidote to fascism. Anton Webern, the "spiritual leader" of Schoenberg's disciples, became a staunch supporter of Hitler.

Adorno, by contrast, remained impressively independent from the various mass delusions of both the right and the left. He's a bit like your crazy uncle who is prone to unhinged ranting, at the end of the day, will probably do the right thing.

It's Adorno, less than 5 stars would be Sacrilege

Bought this yesterday with my father's day gift certificate. Went here to see what others had thought of it and was surprised to see no review posted yet! What gives? Are you guys sleeping on the job?

The translators preface by Robert Hullot-Kentor who also did Aesthetic Theory is vintage translator expressing the torments of trying to merge two different worlds. I enjoyed it and know just what he means. Quine is right about that. But it is harsh! RH-K is a believer in Adorno and what Adorno says in the text. Does one have to empathize with a text to translate it well just as a musician must be in the mood of the music to express that mood? I wonder. Maybe so.

Adorno gave these guys grief. I am sure it applies to our music as well. I read this not simply thinking of the "new music" but the continuing type and wonder if we can associate the trite with the sensuous and the good with the abstract? But then what makes the good so good? Reading on....
