About the Author

Professor Wolfgang Gubisch is Medical Director of the Clinic for Facial Plastic Surgery at the Center for Plastic Surgery, Marienhospital Stuttgart. Prof. Gubisch is double board certified in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery and in Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), and his interests have long included functional/aesthetic nasal surgery. In June 2010 Prof. Gubisch was elected President of the German Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Vereinigung der Deutschen Ästhetisch-Plastischen Chirurgen). He is also current President of the Rhinoplasty Society of Europe and chairman of the Expert Committee of German Nasal Surgeons. Prof. Gubisch has been elected an honorary member of several renowned societies, including the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Southern Africa, the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Each year he is responsible for organizing the Stuttgart Advanced Course for Functional and Aesthetic Rhinopasty, recognized to be among the best courses in the field worldwide. In 1994 he was awarded the Udhi Devi Sood Memorial Gold Medal by the All India Rhinology Society for special services in the field of nasal surgery. Prof. Gubisch has published more than 80 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals as well as many book chapters.

Teen rapper and actor

One of eight entries in ABDO's Contemporary Lives series about current music and acting celebrities, the book follows the transformation of Aubrey Drake Graham from his birth in Canada to becoming a child actor, then a musical star. After his parents divorced, Drake's mother signed him with a talent agency and his first break into the entertainment business was the popular Canadian television series, Degrassi: The Next Generation. During the eight years he worked on the series, Drake also began rapping, putting out mix tapes and working in clubs. He eventually achieved the star status he now enjoys. The numerous color photos will be a hit with teens; they show Drake's collaboration with rap and hip-hop artists. Teens will enjoy the book but it will become dated rather quickly.

Sixteen-year-old Howie Crispers narrates Avi's (The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle) poignant, funny coming-of-age tale set in Brooklyn during WWII. For the facts, readers can consult Stephen E. The hero juggles everything from failing math grades and air raid blackouts to a crush on his teacher and worries about his merchant marine father, criss-crossing the North Atlantic. Howie also suspects his principal of being a Nazi spy, and follows him into a brownstone one morning where he overhears plans to fire his beloved teacher, Miss Rolanda Gossim (he thinks of her at night when fear overtakes him: "She was my emergency brake, my life raft, my parachute, my own private rescue squad"). How he "saves" Miss Gossim makes for a smashing story enlivened by the added emotional texture of a boy dealing with wartime realities (particularly the death of his "bestest" friend Denny's father) and romance (Miss Gossim is actually married to a missing airman and pregnant). Howie's voice, firmly rooted in Brooklyn ("You'd feel worse than a Giants fan in Ebbets Field," he says of disappointing Miss Gossim), takes on the inflections and slang of the era. The novel ends on an upbeat note, with 16-year-old Howie celebrating the end of the war and still carrying a torch for Miss Gossim. Ages 8-12.

Gr 4-6-Howard Bellington Crispers looks back from his 16-year-old perspective to 1943 when he grappled with issues of friendship, fear, love, and loss. At age 11, Howie and his friend Denny share a crush on their teacher and they suspect their principal is a Nazi spy. However, in a sleuthing expedition, Howie learns that the principal's real perfidy hits closer to home-he is urging the firing of Miss Gossim. Howie visits his teacher and she tells him the reason for her pending dismissal-she is secretly married to an army pilot and is pregnant. Taking up her cause and disregarding his promise to keep her secret, Howie circulates a petition to stop the firing, embarrassing the young woman but securing her a reprieve until the end of the school year. Avi packs the story with authentic details of World War II in Brooklyn, NY, augmented by newspaper headlines. He peppers it with funny scenes, lots of slang dialogue between the boys, and a keen sensitivity to the adolescent psyche. Layered into the plot is the drama of the boys' absent fathers. Howie's returns but Denny's is killed, and the bittersweet ending reflects the protagonist's regret over losing Denny's friendship when his own family moves to Long Island. Though lacking in originality, this quick-moving, easily read story will be enjoyed by many readers. A more serious, complex, and in-depth treatment of a similar theme can be found in Janet Taylor Lisle's beautifully wrought The Art of Keeping Cool (Atheneum, 2000).

The war at home is both setting and story in this affectionate comedy told in the immediate voice of Howie Crispers, who looks back a few years to 1943 when he was 11 and living in Brooklyn, New York. Howie has a crush on his wonderful teacher, Miss Gossim, and he's horrified to discover, while spying on the hateful school principal, that Miss Gossim is to be fired. Howie and his best friend have always imagined that the principal was a Nazi spy, but they don't know why Miss Gossim has to go. The spying and the secrets add to the fun, but this is mostly a story about the daily life of kids on the home front. Every chapter begins with a page of dramatic newspaper headlines about the war, which provide context for Howie's worries about his dad fighting in Europe; Howie knows families who have lost loved ones. The times described are hard, but Avi keeps the storytelling light, with fast dialogue and lots of lively detail about a time when grown-ups went away and "it was kids who had the job of trying to keep things normal. Know what I'm saying?" Like Avi's Who Was That Masked Man, Anyway? (1992), this is not so much about war as about ordinary life. Hazel Rochman

Howie Crispers; Good Person

Howard "Howie" Crispers is a sixteen year-old boy from Brooklyn. He tells the story of what happened to him over the course of a week in March of 1943. This is the year Howie was in the fifth grade. He sneaks into the superintendent's home only to hear that his teacher Miss Gossim is going to be fired. Howie is suspicious of the reason behind the decision of the principal of the school(Dr. Lomister) and the superintendent. Howie doesn't haave time to hear why she is being fired because he is already late for school. The only thing he can think of is that Lomister wants Miss Gossim to marry him and she won't. Howie learns better of this though, when he goes to Miss Gossim's house. He goes to he house during an air raid drill and talk to her about what is happening about her being fired. She explains that she is pregnant and that teachers cannot teach and be pregnant. When Howie is about to leave Miss Gossim asks him not to tell anyone about her. Howie agrees but he still wants to help her. He is later reading in a book about petitions and he thinks it would be a good idea to start a petition against Miss Gossim leaving. The next day at school Howie and his best friend Denny get almost everyone in their class to sign but they get caught by Miss Gossim. She is very dissappointed in Howie and she tells him how upset she is with him that he revealed her secrets even though he was trying to help. When Howie goes home he tells his little sister what happened and she says he should bring the petition to the superintendent's home after the Saturday kids movie. He takes his little sister's advice and gets some of his classmated to go to her house after the movie. When they go to her house she says that she will see what she can do about Miss Gossim staying. Howie has mixed feelings about what he has just done. He is happy that Miss Gossim might stay but he doesn't know if he has gone to far and that this action will just upset Miss Gosssim even more. Either way Howie is anxious to see what will happen on Monday. Miss Gossim said that all she wanted Howie to do for her was to pass a Monday math test. Howie studied all day on Sunday and on Monday Howie passed his test. Dr. Lomister and the superintendent talked to the class. To find out what they said you will have to read it for yourself.
I think that Avi did a pretty good job with this book as he does with all his books. I would encourage anyone who is interested in action/WWII stories to read this book.

If I could rate this book from 1-5, I would rate it a 5. I would rate it this because; it's a good book. It has a lot of voice, dialog, and you can get some good pictures in your mind of what's happening. In addition, there are some exciting parts as well.
This book is about a boy named Howie Crispers. His teacher named Miss Gossim. One day Howie was walking to school when he saw his principal, so he followed him to his superintendent's house. Howie over heard that Miss Gossim was going to be fired. Before he could leave the house, he ends up stumbling in a coal pit. He then tells his best friend Denny Coelman of what's going on. One day after school Howie got home when the bomb shelter siren went off. His sister was out there all alone and she hates being alone. So he runs to her and gets her home but before he could go, this security guard told him to do a favor. To go tell his boss that sector 5 is all cleared. Howie then grabs the flashlight and runs to his boss. As soon as he gets there and tells the guards boss some mean fat guard tells him to get shelter or he will be in some major trouble. Then he ends up having to stay at Miss Gossim's apartment. So he asks her room number and goes there. She was oddly surprised to se him. She takes him in and they talk about why she is being fired and about her husband Smitty who was lost at war. The reason she was being is that she is expecting a baby! Howie was surprised and had to think of some way so that she can stay teaching. Soon after they can't think of a way and she is fired. Howie will never forget her.
I would recommend this book to 6-7 graders because it has very short chapters and big writing. Although it has 200 pages, it's still easy to read. It's a great book and I liked it.

Good overview but...

This is a good and up-to-date summary of various international organizations, including their respective histories, structures, mechanisms and shortcomings. However, the word "theories" is somewhat misguiding in the title as the analysis of the subject through IR theories remains rather superficial while conceptual dichotomies (i.e. sovereignty and globalization, power and interdependence etc.) predominate. This is not a bad approach at all but the title should have reflected it.

About the Author
Dividing time between athletics and academics is nothing new to Gary Walton—he's been doing it since he was a freshman at the University of California at Berkeley. At that time, he was influenced by the legendary track coach Brutus Hamilton, whose philosophy emphasized athletics as part of personal development.

Dr. Walton continues to live by this philosophy at the University of California at Davis where he is professor and coach. In addition to being the founding dean of the university's School of Management, he is president of The Foundation for Teaching Economics, a professor of economics and management, and an assistant coach for the university's track team. Dr. Walton received his doctorate in economics from the University of Washington and has authored and coauthored eight books in economics and American economic history.

Dr. Walton's duties on the track include coaching middle-distance and distance runners. He is also a devoted runner himself. As for his coaching philosophy, Dr. Walton emphasizes dedication and hard work, preferring that runners achieve their personal best rather than worry about getting their names in the record books.

Summarizes the philosophies of outstanding coaches

Great for young coaches and high school coaches. It will provide the coach with a framework of the importance of athletics and the role they play in later life development. It is not about "winning" alone ... but about the intangibles that accompany the process of winning. Great historical coaches are examined and insight is given into what they truly believed was important. A must for young coaches ... many life lessons are provided.

Lombardi, Wooden, and a few you might not have known

This book examines the coaching approaches of six "philosopher coaches": Vince Lombardi, Woody Hayes, John Wooden, James "Doc" Counsilman, Brutus Hamilton, and Percy Cerutty. Each is afforded a chapter in the book, and the final chapter gives a summary of the "essence of philosopher coaching." The book's premise is that the men presented believed that coaching was more than wins and losses, that it is inextricably intertwined with the development of the whole person. Each coach presented took a different approach to his methods, but all of them had this philosophical element in common. One of the pleasures of this book is that it has chosen coaches from a cross-section of sports: Lombardi and Hayes from football, Wooden from basketball, Counsilman from swimming, and Hamilton and Cerutty from track and field. Also interesting is that the summary chapter discusses, in part, the flawed elements of each coach's character, implying that they shared the journey toward self-discovery and personal development with the players they coached. An informative book that will certainly help shape (or re-shape) the coaching philosophies of those who read it.

Good stuff here, collaboration of ideas and multiple perspectives. It's almost like cliff notes from great coaches. Easy to read and take what you want from it. Some things overlap and some ideas from coaches overlap but this is a really positive book for any coach.

The Journey of Self Discovery

I came across this book while randomly looking for something to read on vacation. The book brings you on a journey that is part mystery as you cant predicted all the turns and part that reminds us all of our own self discovery.

Author very eloquently reminds us just how powerful life's journey for people of all ages...in this case a well balanced teenager struggling to reconcile the person that he thinks he is, with the person society thinks he should be ...with the person he really is...

A great book to for a group, book club or family to read which will allow great discussion, sharing and reflection.

This book was time well spent.

Personal Truth

"If Boys Could Hold Hands" tells the story of a close-knit group of friends during their senior year of high school. There are moments of real greatness in this tale when the reader is given the opportunity to test their conditioning and wonder about their own personal truth and the intense courage of any person willing to live outside the borders of perceived expectations.

The main character, like so many of us in our youth wants desperately to know what is "right" and how to fit in with his peers and be true to himself. He finds balance in his environment and escapes to wild places frequently whenever trouble arrives, but his ultimate balance comes in the form of self-love and friendship.

This book is valuable for any young person, as it provides a range of characters each coming of age in their own way with a simple message that is almost impossible to hear sometimes - dare to be true to yourself, you're worth it.

Amazing!

A poignantly written coming of age story that leads us down a path of self discovery. The characters are well developed and the story is heart wrenching. It is a book about being different and how we all cope with that while learning how to love ourselves and open ourselves to love others even when we feel we are not worthy. It tells of how influential people can be to us just by being brave enough to be themselves.

From the moment I started reading I was instantly drawn into a world that I, and I'm sure many others, can relate to. I couldn't put it down. The only thing wrong with this book is that it had to end. I eagerly await David Lavallee's next book. He is a master at setting the stage for his wonderful story to unfold.

SARAH CHILDS is Professor of Politics and Gender at the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies, University of Bristol, UK. She has published widely on sex, gender and political representation. Her books include New Labour's Women MPs (2004), Women and British Party Politics (2008) and with Mona Lena Krook, Women, Gender and Politics: A Reader (2010).

PAUL WEBB is Professor of Politics at the Department of Politics and Contemporary European Studies, University of Sussex, UK and has held a number of previous and visiting positions in Britain and abroad, most recently at the Australian National University. He is author or editor of numerous publications, including The Modern British Party System (2000), Political Parties in Advanced Industrial Societies (2002) and The Presidentialization of Politics: A Comparative Study of Modern Democracies (2005). He is currently co-editor of the journal Party Politics.

I don't know how I managed to finish it

I was totally bored I would not classify this book as a thriller or a mystery, not even close. I skipped over so much of this book trying to find something to keep me interested and finally gave up. At chapter 26 I gave up and went to the last chapter just to find out how it ended. I was glad I did, even the ending made no sense.

The story itself is poorly written with confusing descriptions, scenes are disjointed. Characters appear in scenes, though it is stated that they are elsewhere, and it is not because of magic, just poor writing. Confusing pronouns, no mastery of description. I cannot believe a professional editor ever read this book.
